The S60 10mm bolt type just holds the driveshaft in it's splines with relativly light force .
strange that the haynes manual states that the torque is 35nm at stage one then angle -tighten a further 90 degrees this is for V70 &S80 2000 to 2004 for V70 and 1998 to 2005 for S80

Thats for the XC90 which has a slightly different bolt and it is 120 degrees extra not 90 !

you can fit this XC90 type bolt to cure your spline noise ,it has a rubber spacer on the bolt .
but the standard bolt is 50 nm ...

There's a lot of disagreement on torque/plus-angle.

Shouldn't this be the same for the XC90 and S80 ?
It's the same thread - but an extra 30 degrees is a LOT more torque.

I'm gunna ring a few Volvo places tomorrow.

No point coughing 15 quid and failing to cure through undertorque - or overtorquing and paying a great deal more.

Well worth getting right.

These are stretch bolts remember they dont work by torque but by stretching the bolt .. you can go on winding them up with no appreciable increase in torque until they stretch over their limit .. Imagine them being made of plastic to understand the principle easier ..

OK, I'm familiar with stretchbolts - but forgot that that's what these babies are.

What would your torque/angle preference be ?

The only preference would be the correct one as per volvo specifications ..
The XC90 is indeed the same principle as the S80 and others BUT it has a rubber bush to compress between the hub and driveshaft so that would explain the different tightening proceedure ..

So if you were fitting the XC90 bolt to a S60/V70 you would tighten them to what?

50Nm or 35Nm.

Am I missing something that has already been clarified?

Thanks

35Nm plus 120 degrees - the extra 30 degrees takes care of the rubber cone.

doesnt make sense, you are using the first stage torque of a standard S60/V70 bolt and the angle tightening of an XC90 bolt..

with an XC90 bolt should you not use the XC90 installation procedure?

there is a post on this "axle ping" concern on S60R models. Seems american dealers have taken to fitting XC90 bolts.

There is a technical bulletin from volvo as referenced here

http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=60005

I think Clan might be able to clear this up as he's from a dealer
