If you were told that the remap was undetectable then yes I think you were misled.

Matt. edit: this is taken from their website, notice how they say no aftermarket chips fitted, and its undetectable. - dont worry Volvotuning, I have saved a complete copy of the page. RICA ECU Upgrades are designed to get the very best out of your Volvo!!! Unleash the full capability of your car. Power and torque increases that give unrivaled performance on the road, together with improved fuel economy. All ECU Upgrades are a complete re-map of your ECU. There are no bolt-on devices or aftermarket chips fitted. All the ECU upgrades are totally invisible and undetectable. All the power increases quoted for petrol cars are using 98 RON super-unleaded petrol such as Shell Optimax. |

It depends on how you define undetectable. Visibly and to an untrained person the remap is invisible (except possibly for the tabs on the ecu lid). If you have the capability to download the eprom data then it isnt undetectable. If you took 100 people of the street and asked then to identify a chiped and standard car I'm sure they wouldnt be able to tell the difference.
The no bolt on/aftermarket chips must refer to the remap being a remap of the existing software rather than piggyback chips altering sensor inputs etc. I dont see what you guys are after here. Are you after this weeks excuse to call trading standards in? I dont think VT is any worse than any other tuning company. For example Kalmar quotes their exhausts giving 'a significant increase in performance' which it doesnt at all. I'm very pleased with my Ferita exhaust from a quality and sound point of view which is all I expected when I bought it. Sw Autos does a top secret mod to the ecu with its 19T turbo package which does the same as a rechip. Whats going on there then? There seems a few people on this site who probably when they meet at their monthly get togethers have nothing better to do than plan their latest Rica bashing plans. Simon

Hi Bobcat,
In post no 35 you said Stuart was going to pop the cover off your ECU. Well did he? Do you know the answer to your own question? Paul |

using your argument of undetectable - you saying if it cant be seen then it undetectable? so fitting a bigger engine can be classed as undetectable as its under the bonnet? in regards to trading standards, they took action against volvotuning - so whoever called them had grounds to, trading standards confirmed that volvotunings claims were misleading and they advised accordingly. Stick your neck out and have a look to see whats in your ecu! I think Rica warrants that the software wont damage the ecu and not that you have a general warranty on ecu failure. If there was a software problem you'd have found out by now.
if you took 2 cars and one had a bigger engine in it and you again took 100 people off the street to look for differences most would spot the larger engine. Simon

come on simon you cant say that because a 100 people wont know what they are looking at its undetectable, your saying its only detectable is if in big blue neon signs and in your face. your saying that companies can say anything they want as the bloke on the street dosent know any better. have you ever watched watchdog? - so those plumbers that come out and repair a leaking tap by replacing the whole sink, in your eyes are acceptable as the customer goes away with a non-leaking tap. what ever the situation, we need to aim towards living in a consumer world of trust and honesty. |
