Those wheels (the ones I posted a pic of on Pete Javens' car) are definitely called 'sunbursts'. I know this because I have an original brochure from 1980 with that kind of wheel in and they are called 'sunbursts' in their description.

For those members of the VOC - go onto the VOC site and go to the magazine brochures section for the 200 series and find the 1980 244 one. (the front cover has a green 244gle on it pictured in the lake district)

Im unsure of what the other ones are called (the ones pictured on the black 244THOR)

Steve

P.S: John T: That is Pete Javens' car at the 120 earlier this year - he is local to me and in many ways a good friend - he is the one farthest left in the pic.

Also: im afraid that the link above is wrong. It calls the sunbursts "coronas"

16 yr with a 1980 244 I THINK you will find that the piccie by CTCNetwork is of the Corona wheel with the centre cap (NUT Coverer!) removed, making it look like your fave' Sunbursts LOL

The pic that CTC posted is defo a sunburst although it may be the case that the wheels on the 244THOR are sunbursts with caps on and everyone has been mislead (inc. me) to think they are different wheels

Thats the best I could do with my camera and I dont have a scanner but hopefully you can make out the text underneath

I assume that you refer to the following document?:
Linky....

In which case I beg to differ.
The brochure states:
Quote:
This 25 spoke `sunburst' design polished aluminium alloy wheel is available with either a small (as illustrated) or large hub cap.
Yes, it is a "sunburst" design, but that does not necessarily mean that the wheel was called sunburst. Not very greek and Volvo have a habit of sticking to greek or mythology for their wheel names..
Hmmm... Corona: A corona is a type of plasma "atmosphere" of the Sun or other celestial body, extending millions of kilometres into space, most easily seen during a total solar eclipse, but also observable in a coronagraph. The Greek root of the word Corona means crown. (From Wiki)
Not unlike sunburst perhaps..

The article on turbobricks was linked to because that's where the photo came from..
It is also the only such definitive guide to Volvo wheels.

And should you look through that listing of wheels, you will see that 1) Volvo really do stick to mythology for wheel names and 2) they have a number of wheels that are of a sunburst style.

No, I was refering to the 1980 brochure. (see pic I took of brochure - above)

I wasnt meaning it a cheeky or offensive way Des - just trying to correct people.

As I stated above in a reply to Paul Clark - they may have been available with a hub cap but I still stand by my opinion that the wheel is called 'sunburst' - why would volvo not put the name of the wheel - the fancy names are presumably to make the wheels sound exotic and are good for advertising?

Im not going to be an idiot and go along with what I thought was right - I stand corrected and Des - sincere appologies if any offence was caused.

Easy mistake to make though seen as they are stated as 'sunbursts' in my brochure and they look like 2 different types of wheel: one with a hubcap and one without.

Again, sorry and I hope your all not going to start calling me a 'spoilt little know all'

I think you'll get away with it Steve.

There's not that many 16 year olds out there who will admit and apologise for a mistake/misunderstanding so0 gracefully.

No offence taken.

They don't make it easy to identify the wheels by not giving the correct name..

Never even went near the baseball bat..
