Is there road noise from the Pillar by your right ear?
You really should be working with your dealer and let them work with the technical dept to help you ...
Hi Clan,

I am getting really frustrated with the noise and resonance in my new XC90. You responded to a previous post but I can get nothing out of Volvo direct.

I have reduced the tyre pressures to 35 front and 32 rear. This will effect wear and fuel consumption surely??

Will it also damage the Haldex system I read on a post about the old XC90 that this could cause problems. What do you think?

Also, as a man clearly in the know, are they doing anything about this.

Get your tyres off, bond a slab of polyeurathane foam to the inside of your tyres and hey presto you have the equivalent of silent run tyres,

'a la' Pirelli or Conti's lastest efforts.

-3 decibles is claimed!

Interesting tip. Mind you if this chap has bought a new XC90 then I would jolly well expect Volvo to sort the problem or take the car back.

Re reducing tyre pressure and the impact on haldex. I have read that the old mechanical awd system was sensitive to tyre sizes/pressures but haldex doesn't mind.

Haldex has always been able to run with different pressures front to rear with all versions without any issues. Remember what the spare is like? Not even the same size.

Unhappy Resonance

I have just bought a V90 and I get the same resonance - it is really loud on a rough surface - much more than normal tyre roar.

Has anyone got a V90 that does not do this? - if you have can you please say what tyres it has and what size they are.

It seems the XC90 problems are with 45 profile tyres and my problem is with 45 profile tyres.

I have an XC90 with 20 inch wheels and Pirelli Scorpion Zeros 255/45 for the Summer and 17 inch with Continental WinterContact 4x4 235/65 for the Winter.

The road noise is fine with both wheel/tyre combinations but the Pirelli Scorpion Zeros are a bit quieter due to the harder runner and narrower grooves. However they are also harsher due to the lower sidewalls

Any road noise is primarily due to the type of tyre fitted, and of course then reduced by the noise dampening in the vehicle.

To reduce road noise:
  1. Hunt around for different tyres with a lower noise rating.
  2. Or fit more sound deadening material

You'll find one of the two options easier than the other.

Unhappy Noise

The noise I get in my car is more of a deep resonance. The actual tyre roar is not too bad.

It is a constant rumbling noise. It only goes away on glass smooth roads.

It seems really variable as to whether some cars do it. Some people seem to find them really quiet and mine is really noisy.

As far as fitting sound proofing - I have just spent nearly 40K on a car - I should not be expected to fix it.

I am beginning to think Volvo have a fundamental issue on the SPA.
