This inability to play all MP3's is starting to do my head in.
I also have an extensive collection on a large thumb drive in the XC60 that is played on shuffle and only certain songs seem to get played before it seems to loop to the beginning of the same limited set. I have yet to find a track that I cannot actually play but as there are many hours of music on the thumb drive I have not tested them all. My next step would be to create a stick with all the different types of codecs I have used to see if it could play them all but before I do... Do other people have a problem with limited songs on shuffle or is it just me?

Yes just a bit. I must admit it is a quote from a newspaper article as it is far simpler than the Act itself which when you remove the section, para, etc breaks down to:-
'The making of a copy of a work by an individual does not infringe copyright in the work provided that the copy is a copy of the individual’s own copy that is a lawful copy and not a borrowed, downloaded or rented copy as well as not being an infringing copy'Clear as mud that one and I only covered the relevant bit. So you can only make a copy of your copy of the original copy that you own......I think!

Having tested several methods to get the files to play in my XC60, here is one that always works for me and is quite fast.
1. Download WinMP3Packer from http://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php...r#WinMP3Packer. It's free. 2. Open WinMP3Packer.exe 3. Select Profile > Saved Settings > 3. Convert to CBR in place (force) 4. In Input field select folder containing your mp3 files and select Input Types: All. 5. In Output select: - Output type: CBR - Minimum bitrate: 320 Using the following two settings will replace your original mp3 files, so you can change them if you want to keep the originals: - Ovewrite existing files: Enabled - Output folder: Same as output 6. Click on Process button. Compared to Mercedes, I find Volvo media system slow and outdated. Never had any issues playing mp3 files in Merc, it was much faster to start and the user interface was better designed for hassle-free use. |

After a lot of experimentation with trying to get USB stick MP3 files to work with an XC60 from 2009, what I discovered is this: after trying at least ten encoders, the problem is with the ID3 tags - they have to be written to a standard that after 2020 is less common. So the fix is not to re-encode the MP3 files, but to use an MP3 Tag editor to change the ID3 tag versions. I used MP3Tag (free) which has a lot of settings for which ID3 standard to write to. The result is more random than you would expect, and there seems to be something like a tag order for multiple tag formats. If ID3 at default format is first in the list of tags, they can be read fine on the old Volvos. This means you can fix the problem using just an ID3 tagging program, rather than re-encoding the files, which is a lot easier.
For an old Volvo, try MP3Tag (freeware) to write using these settings in the Options: Read (all tags selected), Write (ID3v1, ID3v2/ID2.3 UTF-16; tick ID3v" only if ID3v1 too small), Remove (ID3v2, APE). |
