Challenges from Privacy Campaigners incoming in three, two, one...

(Just for the record I think it's a great idea to use the inbuilt cams)

I can see a problem with inbuilt cameras, as the likes of Austria and Luxembourg ban them.
There would need to be a full proof method of turning them off, to satisfy the local authorities.

What are the local authorities afraid of? Nearly every car seems to have dash cams in Russia, so if its OK there, it should surely be OK everywhere.

For what it's worth, I just make sure my dash cam is working every few months and don't look at the footage otherwise from one year to the next. Its just there 'in case'. The only time I've downloaded a few video files to my computer was when I took my CRV up a ridiculously steep forestry road, which it failed to climb in the dry and was too steep to restart for the good of the clutch. I didn't even think of keeping that, until two days later.

Certainly in Austria, it is a privicy law.
Google Street maps are not allowed in Austria.

Update.
The ban on Google has been lifted, but they have not bothered to go back, due to all the hassle of having to blur out certain features and buildings.

What sort of kinky stuff are the Austrians up to that they wish everything only to be seen by the naked eye and not recorded? What makes them almost uniquely different in Europe to even Russia and Ukraine?

If you wish it to record while you are away from the car, using motion detection, then make sure your chosen cam has that facility, that it has at least 140 degree field of view and that it is wired to a constant live. Also that the live doesn't time-out when car electronics shut down.
Its not a problem, just a few points to be aware of.

I've been looking at those blackvue ones but will checkout the comments on quality someone else made first but you can get a power pack accessory i think that keeps it working when car power shuts off.

There's probably plenty of fuses that don't shut off and to which you could piggy-back. You just need a commonly available piggy-back fuse and a hard wire kit that reduces the voltage from the car to 5V. Some camera sellers offer the hard wire kit as an option but they don't generally include the appropriate adapter fuse.
