I do agree with the fact that if you don't have a problem then that is also important to know. However it would suggest that everyone who has a XC90 should see if the AWD is working.
Infact I would go as far as suggesting that whenever you have your vehilce serviced you should have volvo inspect it for you. After all they normally do this FOC as they are making a huge amount on the service anyway. Or just ask the technician. Make it a point to speak with the Technician when you are having you car serviced! We may then see the failure rate increase due to the fact that they don't normally look for AWD faults if you don't as them to look at it! Correct me if I'm wrong. Chris |

When do you ever get to see a technician at your local dealer then?? every time I go near the place the service reception is the furthest I ever get. the service area is completely off limits to the public in my dealership. The nearest i get to a technician is when i have to clean his oily boot and boiler suit marks of my upholstery!!! Mind you, looking at the various certificates on the wall I'd be lucky if I speak the same language as some of them!! Have a look at that web link I posted in the previous page. that gives some simple advice as im just getting ready to have a good go at Volvo Sweden over the state of my new XC. About the only thing that works on mine is the AWD!!

Speaking to a Senior/Technician and entry into the Workshop, at the following, has never been a problem:- Inverness Perth Carisle Hull Huddersfield The front desk (Service Dept), is not normally staffed with Technicians and they are more than willing, for one, to explain a problem, to someone who might know. One of the Dealerships that I use, has two Assistants, from the Poland, very polite and excellent English. Instead of continually moaning about your Local Dealership, as suggested earlier, move to another one. My two pence, worth. tem. |

Think you must be up to your 6penorth by now Tem. Dont see why I should run a 140 mile round trip to get warranty work done at Dundee at my expense just cos Volvo can't regulate their dealerships and quality control. Until you've actually had work done in the Aberdeen branch and seen the caliber of their work I think you're comments are irrelevant!! I have already praised Dundee in the past as well as London dealership that I bought car from. I've never used your inverness dealer so therefore it doesnt get ANY crtisism untill such times as it does and gives reason for complaint!!
When you've sat freezing in the showroom waiting for a quoted 45 minute job thats ran to over 2 hours drinkin luke warm coffee from a thermos that's been sat most of the day while the sales and service staff huddle round Halogen heaters wearing anoraks and fleece jackets THEN I think you may be in a position to critisice my comments on the local Arnold Clarks!! Dont take my word for it. Try them for yourself then tell me how wonderful they are!! Till then all my comments stand in regard to them regardless of your thoughts on the matter!!

And mine is 6 miles away. That was your choice but that has little to do with the fact Speedbird has no AWD and wants something done which is why I posted the directgov link with the sale of goods act about buying from a dealer. Hopefully he has has a look at this which gives useful info about being fit for purpose and having to be as advertised. These are the basis for any quibble that he has with either a) the purchasing dealer or b) Volvo themselves. I didn't just post to have a pop at somebody. AGAIN!!
Speedbird Apologies for the hijacking of your thread but please have a read of that link that I posted as there is some useful stuff in there and it's in plain English which is also a bonus!! 4WD

4 Wheel Alighment
Guys on Monday I had my 4 Wheel alignment adjusted. The reason for this is that I had a really bad wearing rear near side tyre. Had the tyre changed and Alignment done. The guy in the Garage told me that all 4 wheels were well out. I'm wondering that if the wheels were out of alignment would this affect the AWD? Slightly off topic but this may be of use to you. "Volvo Dealers don't actually carry out 4x4 lazor alignment themselves. They charge you in the region of £143.00 then take it down the road to a small independent who charges them £30 quid" Thats a clear Profit of £113.0 for the Volvo Dealer. Well thats what my dealer wanted to charge me! I told them to poke and went down the road and paid £30. Right back on topic. How many of you have been on the watch dog site yet and registered your problem? |

On the subject of the proportion of cars that experience an AWD problem, I did think of posting a poll, but when I posted on this fourm about whether it should cover all XC class Volvo's the majority of people voting didn't have XC class cars so not giving the results that feflected the views of XC owners, so I didn't think a poll on the AWD reliability would yield a usfull result. Should dealers be checking the AWD is working properly when they service the car? Yes, of course, the service sheet says to check the various items on the transmission including the drive and propshaft, and of course to road test the car, which should show them whether the AWD is working, but how many actually carry out the work properly? I'm sure some do but certainly not all the main dealers maintain the standard of service that Volvo would aspire to. You only have to look at my 940 TD serice sheets to see that my kickdown cable check box was ticked for every main dealer service over a 12 year period but when an auto box specialist checked it he found it to be 25mm out of adjustment and his comment was that it looked like it had never been adjusted. Sorry but I cannot agree with your desire to get watchdog involved besides I don't think they would be interested as the lack of awd as you describe is not really a safety issue.... unlike the Clio bonnet catches or the wandering Mondeo!!! ...more an iconvenience which has only come to light during the recent snow ....you Criticise Volvo for the lack of of a warning light for awd failure that alone should tell you that Volvo do not consider it a safety issue, do really think Volvo would risk it reputation for building probably the safest cars in the world over this ? I am really sorry to read of your problems but I really think you are in the minority amongst XC90 owners, and my experience of Volvo dealers has been very positive too, very helpful, loan cars during servicing, car valeted on return ....like I said I am sorry for your woes and I do hope they can be resolved to your liking .........now can we have some positive posts about this fantastic vehicle ......
