Was thinking of the 1.6d as drive like an old judge and promote fuelsaving through my tracking company so have to have something sensible.
thanks.

I would consider a S60 or S80 D3 , it will feel more lively and use less fuel .. than the D5 .the way you drive ..

I have just returned from a 1,750 mile round trip to the Orkneys which on every kind of road from motorways to single-track roads with passing places (Scottish motorways) with an indicated mpg of 46.5 for the entire journey. Considering the car was heavily laden, I'm reasonably happy with that.

Not been on for a while but thought I would post up some figures for you:

2 weeks without resetting the on-board computer = 43.9mpg

MPG on 3 mixed long journeys of 300 miles + each = 47.2mpg

Tank full to empty combined but mainly 2 long runs = 48.1mpg

The worst I have seen is 42.8mpg

My driving style is probably about the morm for most people doing farly big motorway journeys i.e. whilst I'm not pottering around at 60mph by the same token I have not glued the throttle to the floor.

I would probably say I am sensible on motorways as I don't want to lose my licence and spirited on involving A & B roads.

The above figures are a lot better than I was getting from the Mazda 6 2.0 D sport estate I had which averaged 38mpg :-(

Oh and the Volvo has now covered just over 9,000 miles since the end of March!

Loving it, absolutely superb car!!

I've now done 17,000 miles in my D3. I'm currently using my summer wheels with 245/45/17 Michelin Primacy with pressures at 32 psi for comfort.

My experience thus far is:

Motorway journeys: 50mpg readily achievable with cruise set at 70mph.

Local journeys of between 5 and 10 miles on country lanes and A/B roads, bit of town, parking etc but with some "booting it": 38mpg

Mixed is about 43mpg.

My Winter tyres are 225/50/17 Nokian WR G2 which I run at higher pressures (circa 38psi) and I get slightly better economy than above.

Hello,

Just thought I'd add some figures to the thread :-)

1st tank full in my MY12 D5 with manual box worked out at 44.3 mpg. Funnily enough the computer is actually reading accurate too! Mainly short journeys of less than 18 miles at a time but generally cruising easy between 40-60mph.

Happy with that as I wnated to see 10mpg more than my XC90 and I'm getting it. Not sure if mpg will improve as car puts on a few miles.....

Cheers,
Craig

Yes I'd agree with this. My non SS V50 Drive will easily now achieve indicated 70+ mpg over a tankful with journeys and style of driving. In fact if I try, I can normally get an indicated 80MPG over a tankful if conditions are in my favour.

For example, today I filled up in Eastbourne, Drove home to Maidstone in Kent, (49 miles) all across country with 2 adult passengers in car.

car was showing 77.6mpg indicated.

I'm quite interested in the discussion her on D3 versus 1.6Drive in the V70. I was very tempted with a Drive engined 70 when they first came out. It did feel pretty good and not as you'd expect.

It will never break any records compared to Volvo 5 cyl types, but it is very good and shouldn't be immediately dismissed in my view.

Certainly £30 per year road tax, at least 60+ mpg and a lot more life out of tyres (yes that's another benefit I've found) will all help to reduce motoring costs.

Mostly motorway miles with cruise control set at 70mph.

I did 23 miles after it told me it was empty, and I still didn't get 70 litres in the tank when I filled up. How big is the reserve on these and is it included in the 70 litres fuel tank capacity?!
Hi, thanks for the post, I'm new to forum (and Volvo ownership) and just picked up a D3 XC70. First tankful has averaged 44mpg on computer, will be interesting to see how much that improves as the car settles in and I get used to the motors characteristics. I'm pretty light on the throttle (at least while car bound) and with mainly motorway miles am hoping for close to 50mpg. Will keep you posted.

Hello,

Volvo-lover, I owned in March 2011 my third V70, this
time with D3 engine. The previous one was a 2.0D engine.
Both cars are just dreaming cars.

But I have a strange feeling
I am quite far of the gas usage you are listing.
Car has Michelin 220/50/17 98W @ 2.7KG.
Taking last fuel fill-up for sample : Feeting super light on the gaz,
and being 98% on motorway at 120KMH (74MPH) I used 56.03L for
740KM (460 Miles) so 32.85 MPG if I am not wrong.

I tried turning off Airco to see if usage drops but does not (Temp set as 21°C)

Just equiped my car with Michelin Alpin 220/50/17 Winter Tires @ 2.7KG
and started a new test.

Car is less than 20000 kms from now and avg fuel usage
on 10000kms is 39.79MPG

Am I right thinking car to drink a bit too much or am I on wrong track?
Any similar/best/worst experience ?
Any fix ?

Thanks

Can't help wondering about those pressures; I also have a V70 D3 and the recommended pressures are 2.1 bar rear & 2.3 bar front. The recommendation for heavy loads is only 2.6 bar front and rear yet you seem to be going even higher than that. That can't help your fuel consumption - or, I suspect, your tyre wear.

I think you should be getting better economy than that if you do 98% on motorway at 74mph. Mine would give me 50mpg driving gently like that. I would have to drive like Tintin to get economy like yours. Have you taken it to your dealer to look at it?

P.S. I run summer wheels with 245/45/17 tyres at 2.1 and winter wheels with 225/50/17 at 2.6 and it doesn't significantly affect the economy.
