Interestingly, the government fuel economy figures for a 1986 740GL (my car) range from 23.7mpg for urban cycle up to 44.1mpg for steady 56mph cruising. I did read about someone managing 40mpg out of one of these cars.

940 2.3 HPT Sports Edition, on a good run with my right leg broken 35mpg
On a bad day like the other day with a S70 in hot pursut lucky if I got 18mpg
Average day to day I would say it works out around 30mpg, thats with 200000 miles on the clock.

Default 25!

The various things that I have done to my car have made little difference! I would say pushing 400 miles with a B230FK 945 which has a 75 litre tank if I drive VERY carefully. My car is very well maintained but I have put a D cam and 15g turbo on it. I tend to drive quite heavily but it changes very little from 25 mpg. If you can get high 30's from a petrol motor I would like to know how. I have the fuel economies for 960's which I can root out tomorrow.

Cool

960 2.5 24V GLE Estate Auto / 1996 N reg / 223,000 miles. Petrol of course.

average 22 - 27 mpg most of the time. However, on a run at around 65 - 75mph can sometimes achieve around 29 - 32 mpg on motorways that don't have too many steep hills to get over?

For a heavy beast it doesn't do too bad !

I have a 1988 Volvo 740 GL saloon with the B200E 2.0 litre engine,
43,500 miles original, 5 speed manual, mostly city driving gets me around 18 - 20mpg

(Its always rush hour when i set off to pick the missus up from work or taking her there, damn it!)

A week after getting this car, i took it on a 190ish mile trip and i got arounf 25-30ish mpg on motorway driving, so its rather good for a huge car belting down the motorway, and my driving consists of a mixed bag, as sometimes i like to open her up to around 4000 revs now and then, no higher most of the time i shift at 3000 revs
