We're thinking of something considerably more down market, more like a 16 to 18' half cabin with about 40hp to cruise along the coast for days out.

Are you sure you weren't running a cross-Channel ferry?

Just read this thread through.
If it was my car I would be tempted to pick up a cheap engine and drop it in. It only a few hours work and you make the car usuable again for now. Keep the original engine and collect up the parts you need for a full rebuild. I would then as funds allow have the engine built up and then re fitted. Personally I would be making a good number of tweaks to get good power and better MPG from the engine. The other option would be to buy an exchange engine if you have happy to stump up the money right away - I've only sold a couple of engines like that as most customers want to build the engine up with parts they have in mind. It's also a lot of money that you will never see back - welcome to car ownership! It all comes down to what you want from the car and how much you are prepared to spend. A very low mileage engine like your should still have had a lot of life left in it. It's possible that a new set of rings (or a cam) and seals would have the engine back into serviceable condition. Garages tend to be all too keen to say its complete gone and past it. |

In fact, I've decided to keep the old girl, get the engine rebuilt to my spec by a serious engine builder (ex-Oselli) and have the bodywork tidied. How could I get rid of something this gorgeous: That helped Pip (my fiancee, who's a therapist) move into her new clinic: That takes me around old airfields (RAF Stanton Harcourt in this case: Na. She's staying. |
