Has anyone who has suffered the split pipe also checked the metal pipe it connects to going back to the airbox.

My car is spewing black stuff out when cold, went to check this rubber pipe and discovered the bracket which holds the metal pipe to the side of the engine is cracked all the way through.

Maybe the play this introduces in the pipework from the airbox through to the turbo is what is making the pipe split at the turbo end ?

Hi,
I'm having the same problems on my S60 D5 (04) geartronic. I guess I could have the same mushy pipe problem.

Symtoms when starting cold:
Engine ticks over fine but no torque at all. Engine has no boost at all and is dangerously sluggish.

30seconds later its revvy but still very underpowered.

5-10mins warming up now no problem and runs ok under normal driving.

Floor it getting onto the motorway and the Limp Mode Kicks in. Back off the gas and pretty much within five to ten seconds the limp mode switches off and some power returns.(Thankfully)

Comparing it to my recently sold 850tdi this car has half the power it had.
I kinda feel like I'm answering my own question here I suppose.

The turbo is giving me very little power.

So it all points to something like a mushy pipe with maybe a dodgy boost sollinoid. With expirence from my 850tdi I'm also going to change out all the rubber vacuum pipes to fancy red samco silicone pipes.(Just need to find out the correct ID size?)

I've already swapped out the maf for a cheap aftermarket to see if would show any obvious improvements but alas not much if any.

Next stop Bosch diagnostics specialist and volvo parts centre for new fresh air pipe...

Any other advice or pointers would be helpfull

Cheers
Bob

Hi all
thanks for a brilliant thread.
I followed the original instructions and changed my intake pipe today.
with resepct to this

"The new pipe is very hard & I struggled to get the crankcase ventilation spigot in for 15 minutes before I cheated & gave the plastic body a chamfer with the Dremmel"

To make this easy and instead of resorting to the dremel, i put my new pipe in a tub and covered it with a kettle full of just boiled water- left it for a minute and then, once the heat had softened up the pipe, just pushed the crankcase ventilation spigot thingmajiggy straight in by hand pretty easily( it had been impossible whilst cold).

I hope this helps someone else out like the original post helped me out!

cheers all

matthew

hi clan and all!
still having the engine service required message on my 54 xc90 d5-changed the governor thought it had cured it, but did reappear sometime after when towing but not as often as before with the old governor ,no oil leaks from ic but not pressure tested i must say, i have changed the top turbo pipe tonight £62 from volvo as mine was not split but was soft, and looked as if it might of been going oval and blocking air completely under load ?,anyway the other rubber pipe that attaches from the underside of the turbo to the plastic pipe under the sump (part number 30636856)8-10 inches long approx seems to be very soft also,i took it off tonight and inspected it but have no splits in it,(do you think it should be replaced?) but would you know please if this pipe can also suffer the same fate and squash under load ?and infact any pipes connected to the ic pipe network, it always happens when i am towing my caravan under hilly conditions (a good load)getting the dreaded message and limp mode-getting kinder dangerous.
And yes found the small securing bracket on the alloy pipe broken, must be a common weakness. regards

the pipes you are talking about are under pressure never vacuum so only likely to burst rather than be sucked in .. the only pipe under negative pressure is the one from the air filter metal pipe to the turbo inlet ..

Just come back today kids were off school friday teacher training day, took my caravan out and driving up the m6 under load (xc90 d5 163 manual 54 plate 132k miles)there is a like swooshing noise when i put my foot down in 6th gear or 5th at around 1800-2000 rpm and going up a incline , it only seems to do it underload then the engine service required and urgent engine service required comes on,Also when i left the campsite i drove up a big hill in 3rd gear upto 4krpm and heard no noise or no faults but when it gets warm i seem to get the fault and noise, my intercooler has no oil underneath at all and my rubber pipes look ok,i have changed the governor under the injection rail-and the turbo rhs rubber pipe that goes into the aluminium pipe to the airbox, the campsite i went to by alton towers a guy there had a v70 d5- we compared a few things and he listened to me rev my engine,he asked me if it could be a faulty dump valve or something on these lines as he could not hear any noise by the intercooler area only my dump valve?? sounded louder when i revved to 4k and released my foot off the throttle,a bit louder than his car although he said my engine sounded nicer than his? i also blanked off my pipe going to the 2 engine mountings but it happened again when i came home this afternoon,so think these mountings are ok, could it be the noise under load is coming from the turbo? (maybe? hard to tell) or will i change the intercooler and hope it is that? any thoughts would be most appreciated-regards

It is a turbo pressure leak somewhere and intercooler is prime suspect as long as the 4 rubber hoses are ok .. an intercooler can burst after 100000 miles , there wont be any oil stains if its just started happeneing , only if its been happening a while ..

hi clan i changed my intercooler last weekend bought a new one from volvo as could not source one for this car from anywhere else cost £221 inc vat should have been £235 but ask for discount, anyway just come back from devon and can confirm it has not helped a bit, when i am going up a incline towing the caravan the noise starts at 1800rpm to around 2400 rpm, it is getting worse as it sounds as if it is the turbo is squealing and lifting off the pedal it sounds as if the turbo is like grinding noise and when it is squealing if i leave my foot on the pedal for 10 seconds or so it then goes into limp mode "service urgent" i cannot stress how loud it is getting inside the car when the turbo spins up,i have checked all hoses-no splits, tryed blanking off the mounts-
i have replaced the inlet turbo rubber hose at £62 incase of load collapse,
i have replaced the turbo governer at £133 and intercooler at £221,and the noise is getting worse, think it must be the turbo?? possible faulty waste gate or dump valve or just knacked turbo??
but is ok when not towing only a lower air turbo spinning noise can be heard(not when i change gear-it is constant)
ps when i removed my old intercooler found the date on top of it which was dated nov 06,so it must have already been replaced as my xc90 is a 54 plate sept 2004,i bought the car a month before it was 3 years old at 118k miles and now its on 133k miles as i only use it for private family use,so a bit gutted that i did not need to replace it,to be honest wish now i had taken it to a volvo independent as i have spent a lot on it for parts and my own time in the garage and yet to no avail , anyway any advice on my turbo please and what to check for and how easy is it to remove the thing from behind the bulkhead and do i by new a second hand or is it a simple repair?? any input would be kindly appreciated-regards
