regarding reasons for fitting the 19t, include the fact that its a pretty straight forward swap, used by volvo allready and a bit laggy so ok spool up and boost control.
Plus in lance's case, he has a half baked 19t install as im aware. the tuner that fitted his turbo just changed the front end of the turbo (compressor) which means you dont have to unbolt the turbo from the manifold and downpipe, or have to fit a new downpipe which has caused them some issues in the past. Using this method can save tuners alot on parts (no need for new studs, gaskets and other connectors which are very expensive from volvo, and need to be the correct part) and also alot on the reduced labour times which increases profit. so you can see why tuners will recomend the 19t half baked upgrade as its a nice product to sell, nice for the customer as they dont need a dp, and good profit margin on the install. offcourse there are better turbo's out there, ive done a custom map for t28 hybrid and its a very strong turbo which was able to hold 1 bar easily to redline. regarding the 19t, its not that great a turbo but does flow more than the 15g and 16t's, and ever so slightly more than an 18t. But with the correct mapping i would take the 16t overall.

Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean as the mechanics / facts about the T28 in question, and how it differs from the 19T, should still apply. The update to that discussion is that we now have some members on our forum who have that T28 hybrid installed (and for some time) on their cars so they should be able to give you direct comments about their experiences with that particular turbocharger.

Will remember this, next time I want to mod my car. I hear the turbo is very small. If ever there is a replacement, knowing who is giving the advice is vital. cheers. |

I would actually take that one step further to say that an experienced software tuner (mapper) will be able to maximise the power from ANY turbocharger fitted to a car, in combination with pretty much any hardware. As both Jacq & Ross have also commented, we really do have humongous turbos fitted to our piddly little 1.9L engines, but still driveability around town is still decent and top end power is insane. Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with going down the tried and tested route, especially if someone is reluctant to take risks, but as far as tuners go, what does set the men apart from the boys is a leap into the unknown, with impressive results at the end of the tuning.

Can’t quite get my head around the 360-370 BHP quoted output for the T28 though, is it still running. Only joking. pyaap, off topic slightly but is your GT30 a standard 0.64 A/R?

Just for reference my old turbo was completly removed and replaced with a new upgrade turbo installed in its place therefore the coments above are complete noncense. The Upgrade turbo holds well over 1 bar of boost to the redline! |

do these quotes sound familiar: "Glad you like it Lance. This is with a standard 2.5" Volvo downpipe too!!!" "I also would like to say thanks to the Big man himself J for convincing me the 19T hybrid was the route to go," please dont try and insult me lance, you have posted many times before about your hybrid, or im my terms "half baked" 19t. I look forward to your reply lance. Thanks Matt.
