2007 A6 Avant Le Mans, low suspension, quite hard ride, 19" 255 x 35. Similar levels of road noise at motorway speed, but quieter than the XC90 at lower speeds.

2008 X5 xDrive35d M Sport on adaptive suspension, 20" 285 front, 315 rear. Way way quieter than the XC90 at lower speeds and a reasonable amount quieter on the motorway.

2015 X5 M50D - 22", 3xx rears, not sure about front, all v low profile. Again, way way quieter at all speeds.

2016 Q7 272PS - this was a car we test drove, not sure about the wheel size, but whey certainly weren't small... Unbelievable levels of refinement, very very low road noise.

2016 X5 M Sport - again on test drive, lowish profile tyres but don't have the size, as above M50D.

VW Touareg 2013 - 19" wheels, very quiet and refined compared to XC90.

I appreciate one persons perception of loud road noise is different to another, but all I can say is that my XC90's road noise levels just don't seem to be at one with the rest of the package. I guess more than anything its the way the noise builds so quickly, even at relatively low speeds.

Interesting. I have not been in the new q7 but I have been in a late previous one... And refinement was amazing. Way above my xc90 2010.

That Audi 3.0 IS amazing and as economical as Volvo 2.0 tdi

But the xc90 Mark II is growing on me ... I now think it is a very good looking car a way the q7 is not

We had almost bought the Q7 in Jan of this year. I'd have it now 3 months almost if we had. However I think the new car looks plain. It's nothing special on the outside and all the colour options you might want are 5k euro. No one will spend 5k euro on a paint job.

Secondly the PHEV only comes in 5 seats, we _really_ needed the 7 seats. The inside of the Q7 is a bit dated, I've had an A7 for the last year and it's all a bit meh.

The XC90 ticked a number of boxes for us and that's why we went with it. I will miss the 4x4 272bhp v6 Diesel though on the Q7. *sniff*

They are standard fit Continental tyres and the car has air suspension.

We ordered our T8 inscription with air and 21" wheels but I also added the laminated glass which seems to help a lot in quietening the car down, as its effectively double glazing

Does that make any difference to wheel road noise though.

Angry post script to original post

I have had my inscription (20" wheels) with air suspension for 3 weeks now and if anything the road noise/resonance is getting worse, I am not happy with this car at all, £59k down the drain, VOLVO how can you put such a bad car on the market and claim it to be a premium brand, if the noise level was sorted it would be a half decent car.
In my opinion the air suspension is a waste of £2100, the SatNav and voice control are also rubish.
VOLVO you must bo better, your silence on this noise issue is deafening. I have had 7 Volvos but this will be my last.

Thank you to all who have left comments on this thread.

Have you been in touch with Volvo UK for their response on this?

Last week I took out an R Design for a couple of hours. It had 22" wheels and air suspension.
A short trip on the M1, a couple of fast A roads and normal commuter roads.
I have to say I did not experience any droning or resonance although having read any comments on the forum I was listening out for it.
It may be something which only certain vehicles have and therefore maybe the majority are okay.

That's interesting, thanks. I wonder if it is something tben specific to the 20" wheels and continental tyre combination?

Does anyone know if the B&W sounds system includes active noise cancelling?
