Thanks Newbie1. I also tried pressing the menu button and the rear fog light switch - which I had read on here.....it brings up various acronyms I think - nothing appeared to be wrong, it just said 'dtsc set' etc.

Talking no awd

'dtsc set' means that there is a fault code stored on that module,it should be dtsc checking or dtsc ready that means there is no codes stored.for your awd do it again, and if you look for DEM as you go through the modules.if you get DEM checking or DEM ready you have no fault codes on awd system so poss mechanical ie spline sleeve.if you get DEM dtsc set you have codes or a code one the awd module i think if it has a code it will shut down the awd system so no damage can be done(i have read this on this forum)if you do have dtsc set then its to the dealer for codes to be read,or you need someone with a dice unit or a bsr ppc code reader/or eu702 code reader.these will read the modules for the awd system, any obd code readers only read engine codes not all modules, hope this helps so look for DEM that is the awd module.

Thanks Newbie1 that's a big help. I did see other letters with 'set' after them, but I need to check again - I will do that tomorrow. I went under the car earlier and was able to turn the propshaft by hand - car was in neutral...engine off as you might imagine..! Should it turn when wheels are on the ground?

The propshaft should be directly connected to the front wheels , so when the car is on the ground no it should not be possible to turn the propshaft .

If the front is raised , then turning the propshaft will rotate the front wheels .

Angry no awd

check your dtcs,if you have no codes it will be mechanical on the d5 ,if it is the spline sleeve. http://www.v70r.com/forums/index.php...27&#entry81927 look at this volvo forum for spline sleeve.i had simple task of removing a code and my awd back. i wish you lived local so i could put code reader on you car,i have little mechanical experience only 1st year city & guilds but have read so much about the awd problem i do feel i can give you some advice to help you on your way to poss solve the f+_%$£ problem. there is so may people out there that do not know they have no awd as no warning lights, and i feel so annoyed that they do not know, volvo should hold there heads low for such a class suv can be let down by poor quality and poss cause an road traffic collision due to no awd.

Thanks Newbie1 I appreciate your comments.
I have put the car into a shop as it's the easy albeit lazy option - for now.
Going forwards I willl definitely investigate one of the code readers myself.
Thanks again,

Well now I'm worried that I don't have AWD...having only just purchased this 2nd hand 2007 (07 Plate) MY2007 XC90 V8 Auto...I get the following messages:

Checking DTCS...then
DTCS in Vehicle...then underneath DTCS in Vehicle

BCM DTC SET
SAS Ready
SRS Ready
TCM Checking
ECM Ready
DEM DTC SET
CEM DTC SET
DIM Ready
DDM Checking
CCM DTC SET
PDM Checking
PSM Checking
ICM Checking
REM DTC SET
PHM Ready
UEM Ready
HCM DTC SET

Does this suggest plenty wrong...and in particular will I have no AWD as it reads DEM DTC SET?

Appreciate any help out there, thank you?
