... well, all we can know is that car (the time capsule one) failed to make £1,650 (that single bid being a shill one) - which is sort of in line with my thoughts, I notice the owner has re-advertised it with a starting price of £1,450 and a buy-it-now of £2050. I suppose he thinks it might be worth about 2 grand, but has learned a lesson regarding putting the starting price too high (and I hope about shill bidding as well).

The time capsule looks like a nice enough car that with a week's fiddling around and perhaps £700 (a re-silvered headlamp, a bit of treatment for the rust under the tailgate, a new radio, some sorting out of the interior and a bit of paint) could be improved quite a bit. It is no spring chicken though, its 30 years old and has 200,000 miles - I'd have thought £1,500ish would be fair and reasonable.

:-)

Mileage, it's almost run in by now.

30 years ... Volvo are made to last.

Rust under the tailgate. Usually means a bodyshop job. Taking up the £700 budget. Worth doing if the car is going to be kept.

With fiddling around that rust can be "lost" until it eventually spreads throughout and reaches MOT important areas.

... and the seller of this £2,500 car only wants £6,000:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174719205...m=174719205735

I didn't attract any interest during at the first attempt - so has been re-advertised at the same price - Ho hum :-)

Default As rough as a badger's arse:

Now this one will test my theory (see above) about the price of rough cars:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-240...gAAOSwP61gaZVM

... I'm pretty sure I've seen this one advertised previously (I can't remember the details, but I rather assume it didn't sell).

... as rough as a badger's arse: needs a new cylinder head (maybe much more, it is hard to say), needs welding to the sills (it will be much worse than it looks on the outside), needs trailering away... looks like a project car that someone has given up on when they realised it was all too difficult.

The good bits though: it has half a tank of old fuel :-)

This one is only good for spares, maybe £600?

PS. There is something fishy about the MoT history for this car, it passed the test just under a year ago:

24 April 2020
PASS
View test certificate
Mileage
176,624 miles

Having failed it only the week before:

16 April 2020
FAIL
View test certificate
Mileage
176,623 miles

with all these major faults:

Repair immediately (major defects):
Nearside Rear Axle swivel pins and bushes swivel pin and/or bush excessively worn (5.1.2 (b) (i))
Offside Rear Axle swivel pins and bushes swivel pin and/or bush excessively worn (5.1.2 (b) (i))
Nearside Rear Lower Shock absorbers has an excessively worn bush (5.3.2 (c))
Nearside Parking brake inoperative on one side (1.4.1 (a))
Rear fog lamp not working (4.5.1 (a) (ii))
Registration plate lamp inoperative in the case of a single lamp or all lamps BOTH (4.7.1 (b) (ii))
Offside Track rod end ball joint has excessive play (2.1.3 (b) (i))
Nearside Front Wheel bearing has excessive play (5.1.3 (a) (i))
Side repeater not working BOTH SIDES............. (4.4.1 (a) (ii))
Windscreen wiper not working (3.4 (a))
Parking brake efficiency below requirements (1.4.2 (a) (i))

... this sounds like one of those MoT certificates that cost £100 in a pub, but didn't actually need the car to be inspected... ho hum :-)

... the seller seems really genuine and has been candid. I rather suspect the car isn't really worth saving, but the number plate might have a value (perhaps £500? - I'm not sure about the rules for transferring the plates from a SORN car, I have a vague recollection that cars have to be on the road for the plate to be moved, but I could easily be wrong).

I'll keep an eye on this one and report back with a sale price on Monday - my guess is £750 - maybe a grand if someone wants the plate).

:-)

Thank you for pointing this out. Currently bidding is £600.

There are aspects of the car that members with more knowledge than me might well have recognised as lifting it to be of interest?

It has some parts of interest. But. I hope it turns out to be a car for someone to recommission.

I am not considering buying. But. If I had the facilities time and energy to recommission it, I would give it a thorough look.

Stephen

Most of those failures are bulbs and bushes Alan plus a track rod end and a wheel bearing - maybe a simple adjustment if it was the correct sort of bearing or change the hub complete if not.
Then there's the handbrake and wipers, again nothing structural and perhaps cleaning a fuse (if continental type) or an earth would probably coax the wipers back to life, handbrake difficult to call without knowing what it's doing/not doing but most of it could be sorted with a few hours spanner work.

The list looks worse than it is i think.

That said, it is as rough as the badgers proverbial, will need at least one rear light for the next MoT (indicator horrribly faded) but the worrying bit is the B230FK engine - has he fitted the LH2.4 loom or was it originally a B230F? What is the problem with the head, did the gasket fail, is it warped or what?
Has some unconscious incompetent used OAT coolant in it and caused it to gel with the remains of EG coolant, clogging up the entire cooling system?

He says in both ads he's looking for £900, i'd guess at the mid-point between those of £750 unless someone really wanted it, phoned him up and said he'd give him a grand and pick up ASAP. He would have had to have really wanted it though!

I suspect you are right Dave: £750ish I should think.

The engine piece was a bit odd, in one ad the seller claimed it was a B230A (but it doesn’t look like a carburettor motor) and in the other a B230FK (wouldn’t that have been a turbo?). Either way, it had been changed, but not well by the sound of it.
