Well my car is in with Volvo and has the dreaded issue. Been quoted over £1400 to get it repaired, a swift call to Volvo UK and they say I should be able to get the 20% back (car has done over 75k) as long as it is the 'known issue'. Well have called the dealer and he has gone off to check the situation and let me know. So fingers crossed!

Oh and thanks to all on here who have made the possible for owners like me!

Smile XC90 AWD failure

Lost rear wheel drive function some time last year and only just discovered when trying to escape our road in the snow! Did the usual research and discovered all the posts on here. I went to main dealer and was offered 20% but they diagnosed as the angle gear. I challenged them and said I thought you could replace just the spline sleeve. Their answer was 'we have only ever had one spline sleeve that could be replaced'!!!! After contacting Braydon Motors they said the complete opposite and they also said that the price difference was £800!!!!!
I also had Volvo check the heavy steering. They diagnosed a pump failure. Cost to replace £600. Braydons diagnosed the problem to be rack failure! Because they tested the pumps pressure and ruled that out... Volvo did not even test the pump. So the moral of the story is , despite the main dealer being 'experts' I could have spent £2000 when £950 will sort it! Not to mention the fact that the steering would have still been screwed! I am really p@*#•d off with Volvo. I am going to ask for my £58 back for the original diagnostic report.
The car is in with Braydons now so will report back on how they do. First signs are positive.

Default No drive to real wheels.... HELP...

Hi - I have a xc90 / 2003 with circa 100K on the clock - I have the front wheel spin when pulling out of juntions and in the snow the car needed a push up small inclines - A local independant confirmed there appeared to be no drive at all to the rear prop shaft -so I believe from reading various posts I have the dreaded bevel gear spline issue......of course happen to join any fight for action in the courts, but at a practical level does anyone have a garage in the South London or wider London Area that can fix this problem at a resonable price without having to go to the dealership (whom unfortunately I do not trust and seem to think their customers are open cheque books) - any contacts / direction would be appreciated - Many Thanks

Default No AWD

I have owned a 740, 850 and an v70xc (with viscous coupling AWD) and they have all been super reliable, So it was reasonable to assume that my 2004 xc90 would be of an equal quality. I was very wrong. First the Cam belt tensioner snapped at 65,000 miles and ruined the cylinder head, this cost me £2,500 to fix. The alarm randomly stopped working and required a new siren to the tune of £300. The parking sensors continuously beep when reverse is selected. The back right door wouldn't open and cost £350 to fix, and now it's broken again and the dealers don't know how to fix it. And now to my delight, the AWD won't work, it needs a new Bevel gear and is going to cost me £1,500 to put right. And don't think my car has had a hard life, it's never towed a thing or been off road having done 98,000 miles. Volvo don't give a stuff either. I'm done with volvo and won't be buying another one. At least they are still safe nowadays but that's about it.

So...

I've owned an XC90 for a week (55 plate manual). Bought it as an approved used from Volvo. They said they would guarantee that the AWD system worked.

Guess what...one week later...

It came with a 6 month warranty...just a shame I live two hours away from the dealership. I rang and them emailed them this afternoon sharing the video with them, and have said I will leave it with them for week and I want a courtesy car in it's place.

Will let you know how I get on!

That's just embarrassing that is. If they guaranteed it would work, then you shouldn't have a problem getting it fixed.

Nah, come on, you really shouldn't.

I've just bought a 2009 R-Design, and every tiny little thing I can find wrong with it I've gone back to them about it and they've been great. I left it with them yesterday to have the right-hand exhaust realigned and the 12 volt sockets fixed. They gave me a brand new s60 R-Design for the day. And that was just with me moaning about one of the exhausts hanging down a bit.

What did the dealer say?
Are they going to fix it or are you just returning the car and asking for the money back.

I hope I don't have any issues, but you never know. Will let you know.

I was considering asking for my money back, but I know this car has had a fair bit of work done on it by a Volvo dealer using Volvo parts, so I'm happy to stick with it. Better the devil you know is the best phrase to describe it!
