Yes Alan, they used to dwell but not so much now, in fact eBay seem to shift them swiftly now.👍

Years back I saw a listing on ebay for a 350SL, Gold and Burgundy.(not to my taste)
It had a ridiculous price tag and an exorbitant write up that seemed to go on forever. It went off to extol the prowess of the marque, right back to the Benz patent Motorwagen.(It could have been up to 10 pages)
I couldn't let it lie,(sometimes my ire gets the best of me )
I messaged the seller with the following words..."What planet are you from?"
He replied "I am from Earth, do you want to buy the car?"
I didn't answer.

Thank you Andrew, I managed to find one of the ads:

I'm guessing the scam is to get people to respond to the email address given in the other photo:

... perhaps in order to capture their personal details, or somehow spread a computer virus?

It would appear the advertiser has probably captured the photo from a genuine ad - and judging by its small size perhaps from a cell phone screenshot (possibly so it is more difficult to chase?).

It is hard to imagine anyone falling for this, but I suppose some folk must, otherwise the advertiser wouldn't bother dangling the bait.

Ho hum

PS. I've noticed the eBay seller's account seems to be a genuine one with many previous sales, so I'm guessing it has been hijacked?

The criminal fraternity doesn’t waste its time on things that don’t work, usually.

There’ll be a crop of some sort!

"Free collection in person from IS, Uk, United Kingdom" - where is "IS" exactly or is it "Islamic State", "Idiots Service", "Income Support" or what?

I don't know of anywhere known by those initials (Isle of Sheppey perhaps?) but the fact that the location is confusing is a red flag for me.
The small photos IME are used so people want to see better pics, simply resized, probably lifted from somewhere on t'internet. I remember a similar scam from ~25 years back, pics of a particular car were shown (decent sized pics too) and the car was offered on a BIN with the caveat the buyer must transfer a deposit of £500 (may have been £1000) by direct bank transfer within an hour of listing end or the car would be relisted. No returns, refunds (even of the deposit) or discounts given.

Unfortunately with those caveats in place, it left the "buyer" with very little redress if something went wrong - eventually ebay pulled the listing although it did appear again about 6 months later.

Like Andrew said, the criminal fraternity don't bother with things that don't work, they quickly move on to something that does.

From my experience in tech, this is likely a phishing scam - the unassuming enquirer will email the scammer using that email, then either:
  • The scammer will reply with an automated message to a link to a scam site; clicking on that link could install malware or (more likely) a keylogger to scrape your details from your PC.
  • Or, the scammer will respond with a custom (actually written) message, which will attempt to get you/the buyer to send over a deposit using something like western union.

Either way, a nasty outcome for those who aren't in the know!

Alan,

Perhaps you could cast your critical eye over this one coming up at ACA, at the lower end I could be tempted.

https://angliacarauctions.co.uk/clas...n-estate

MOT history was fine till last one done in 2019, so my guess is change of owner around that time who decided not to test???

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

That looks quite similar to NAP577F sold by Anglia Car Auctions in January for £13k and now being hoiked [?] on Car and Classic for £17k!

The rear of the car has filler. See the seems under the rear reflectors are gone. The rear and rear corners are the most difficult area of the estate to fix. Lower tailgate and the panel under it quite often go, looks like it has. No repairs are available and I had to make new ones so would be costly if paying someone to fix properly. Certainly would not bid unless you have a look in the flesh and take someone who knows the estates. A lot have had hard lives as opposed to the sedans.
