The upselling has been horrendous whenever car has been in for service/Mot. Sir, your pads/discs have been used more than once we recommend changing them. My response, are they an MOT advisory or failure? no, well no need to change them.

We are near Oldham but happy to travel to a decent independent.

Hallmark Volvo in Stockport or Trevor Burgess in Hyde. Both are very reputable independent Volvo Specialists and won't rip you off.

Both garages are generally busy though, so expect a wait of at least a week if you do phone to book in. You could ask if they could do it sooner, as in you just drop in and a mechanic takes the wheel off whilst you wait, but that's not guaranteed (so don't expect it). Any time I've been to these garages, they're always busy.

Contact detaills;

Trevor Burgess Volvo, Unit 1/Sandpits Business Park/Mottram Rd, Hyde SK14 3AR - 0161 368 9911 (Open: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm).

Hallmark Volvo, Canal Wharf, 1 Wharf St, Lancashire Hill, Stockport SK4 1UD - 0161 429 0008 (Open Monday-Friday: 8:30am-5:30pm).

I've highlighted the TMS website prices and the dealer agreed to cut the total price down 30% from £1260.00 to £882.00 (front & rear all round pads & discs + brake fluid change).

Still expensive I know... But if someone else cannot DIY or find available local indies, and have to do it in dealers then at least ask for discounts...

Oh BTW Stoneacre have a habit of recommending unnecessary work. So maybe it is all not needed. Mine is a T8 but front disks weren't done until 120k miles.

Sorry to resurrect this, but I have just been quoted 1.4 hrs, or around £240, to fit only the rear discs and pads I picked up with a 40% discount. That seems a long time just to swap out the brakes, but I've been told it's the book time.
In an earlier reply a need to reset the e handbrake was mentioned. Is that the case? In which case the £60 I've been quoted by a local garage would suggest that they are not aware of the resetting requirement. Does that also mean that a DIYer couldn't change the brakes either?

The Book time is 1.5 hours to change the rear brake pads and discs.

There is no extra "resetting " I assume that is retracting the rear pads which needs the VIDA connecting... That is included in the 1.5 hours from the standard times book.
You can do it yourself by taking the calliper winding motor off and winding back the pistons yourself with a splined tool whilst the calliper is off changing the pads.

Thanks Clan.
Back in the day I'd probably be giving it a go myself but I'm not able to now. I just couldn't understand the book time when back in the day I could do front discs and pads on the V70 in 20 mins a side!
Looks like my cheap quoter didn't appreciate the handbrake time element either.
Off to find an indy with the software then

The dealer will rip you off. They are charging anything from £130-£160 a hour nowadays, whereas an indy would be anything from £60-£80 per hour for the same thing.

My dad had rear pads replaced at an indy for £60 labour plus the parts. It worked out £90 the time (£60 labour, £30 for the pads). This was about 5 years ago… genuine pads too, not aftermarket. Prices will have changed since then.

We didn’t have the time to do them ourselves. Either way, an indy will be cheaper.
