I find this hard to believe, if that was the case then how do you get different figures for the same engine in different model cars?

I should correct myself slightly in that the engine can be in a car on a rolling road which creates the different simulated loads - what is surprising is that they actually have an engine there at all as everything can be simulated these days

I have had the mpg drop before after a service on various cars, then after a hundred miles or so it goes back to what it generally was. No idea why.

When I first test drove the XC60, it was an auto, and I drove a mix of urban and motorway, using kickdown a plenty to test the performance. It averaged about 28mpg over about 15 miles,so reckon 34 ish would be a good average for the auto with normal driving.

Is your driving a lot of urban, because fuel is used when the dpf does a regen if not up to temp or over so many revs ,say on a motorway. I notice that when the car is regenerating (or when I think it is) - however hard I try instant consumption on the trip is never above 26 ish mpg on the motorway - then after 10 mins or so it goes back to normal readings. When doing a regen,it has a dramatic effect on the average mpg readout, and I can go from an average of say 38mpg down to 33mpg. This is when the average is reasonably settled after doing say 150miles.

I know official mpg figures are fantasy and do not reflect real life, although I do find Volvo are way way off. I also find brand of fuel plays a part. With supermarket fuel I get lower mpg, whilst with Shell/Esso/BP etc much better.

To further illustrate the point the D2 1.6 d is currently returning circa 45 mpg (when official figures dictate 65).

I have given up worrying too much about fuel, although as wimorrison says as well, I reckon yours should be returning a few more mpg!

Regards

Ours is averageing 18 mpg but it's only done 600 miles or so, coast down test's for homologation etc are done on rolls as previously stated, but importantly done useing an aged catalyst (around 100,000 km's I think) this has a genuine impact on economy but is only a small part of the none real word figures, but it's a level playing field for all OEM's.

My XC60 average MPG has dropped like a stone since my last service (Oct 12) when garage loaded a computer update. 2.4D DRIVe was 44.2 mpg, now down to 42 mpg (have had it up to 45mpg). Has anyone else had the same problem?

I take great pride in my driving and my journeys have not changed the change was noticeable immediately after the service.

Garage say that others have mentioned it but nobody seems willing to do anything about.

just over 2mpg is not much of a drop. Sounds like it is just the time of year.
temprature drops and engine uses more fuel. happens in all cars
