The damage is definitely in the head so I have a quandary....do I strip the engine and replace whatever is making her sound like she ought to be ploughing a field or do I bin her and find another T5R engine?

Also, does anybody have any idea or what sort of price I could pick up a T5R with lowish mileage (up to 100k) engine for?

Many thanks

From a very poorly banana
new rods are around 500 quid i think......

i think mine would of bent by now if it wasn't for the ecu overboost (max air) limit, i am surprised it didn't cut in on Mouthy with no BCS but i guess it could be due to something thats been done or just different software between the T-5 & T-5R's

afaik the ecu is a bit sluggish with overboost.... your mbc is set at 18psi? mouthy may have had a 25psi boost spike before the ecu cut.....

my overboost cuts in quite quick (quite often hit it, keep meaning to turn my MBC down but never got round to it lol). Not sure what the MBC is set at, seen 20.8psi on the guage

altho the the ecu hasn't been remapped or anything it has been tricked somehow to allow Mouthy to run a higher boost, it used to boost off the standard guage

There it is...way too much boost for the fuel you have on tap...massive detonation...banana shaped rods.

A calibrated boost gauge might be a worthwhile investment, if you don't have one already. One of the things which scares me about the newer turbo Volvos is that there's no boost gauge.

Give Salvo a call. Get a later engine if you can. Mention you're a friend of the chap who's forever buying M90s off them, and they might give you a few quid off. Additional advice PM'd.

cheers

James
