you're right. the figures on the right are not the official figures. the official combined figure for a D5 manual is 49.6 not 50.4. this could be reported to ASA: http://www.asa.org.uk/. although might be best to report to volvo uk first.

what makes you suggest that? do you think it's not a great enough exaggeration by volvo, or that it's not prominent enough as part of their marketing? or maybe both?

The fact that it is only a difference of 0.8 which equates to 1.5% exaggeration - and this exaggeration is in a test figure that will never be achieved in reality, therefore I contend that this difference is inconsequential.

Hope you are good and well and have enjoyed the glorious sunny weekend? There may be "small" improvements although I opine these amount to little. Official fuel improvements I do believe are down to just the stop start...which in real life operates only about 40% of the time...so the MY12 is very very very slightly better than the non stop start MY11 or MY 11.5 MY12 has a tiny bit more power than the MY11 or MY11.5 (212 or 215 or thereabout compared to 202-205 or thereabout) Real life driving..say on motorway - absolutely no difference...in town....probably absolutely no difference as stop start only works about 40% of the time)...due to load on the battery - has the car travelled far enough for the battery to be charged a good amount - doubt it...... Real life difference - half a mile a gallon - although bench lab test would say other wise. As a rough guide with first figures actual and second official Metro 43mpg - Official 50mpg Volvo 340 gle 33mpg - Official 38mpg BX 19gti 32mpg Official 36mpg Renault 5 diesel 65mpg Official 62mpg 205 diesel 72mpg Official 76mpg Focus 1.6 petrol 44mpg Official 49mpg Jag 3.2 26mpg Official 31mpg XJR 26mpg Official 29mpg Laguna 3.0 28mpg Official 34mpg Picasso 52mpg Official 52 mpg Sierra 35mpg Official 38mpg 360 Modena 16mpg Official 21mpg Merc s280 28mpg Official 30mpg Mazda 5 diesel 38mpg official 46mpg It does seem though that a Volvo D5 with an official of 50mpg only achieves 32mpg - 40% less (above cars are rough approximations) Big difference to the varied cars above with their actual and official mpg doesnt it.??? |

Update
My MY12 car has now covered over 3000 miles since July 2nd and is averaging 35.4mpg from new, i have not reset the button.
The free 3000 mile check has been completed and all is well. |

My nearly 8 month-old MY11.5 D5 has just completed a ~2000 mile round trip to the south of France with four passengers, boot loaded to the roof, and four bikes on top. Average fuel consumption for the entire trip was 30.8 mpg (reset just before setting off).
I reckon that's not bad considering the ~1500 miles at an indicated 75mph with the four bikes on the roof. The D5 performed flawlessly, maintaining that speed in 6th gear even up some fairly decent inclines on the autoroutes. The previous average, not reset since new, was around 35 mpg. |

I can understand that the official mpg figures are not matching real life figures in a city driving environment as there are so many variables that can affect the fuel economy but call me naïve I don’t understand how the extra urban figures can be so way off; I mean driving at constant speed for a few miles (say 60 mph for about 10 miles) on a road that is not especially hilly/bendy/windy should return the same or close figure in real life as the on their test bed which is in my case 50.4 mpg (MY12 D5 AWD geartronic) yet the best I ever got is 38mpg on a good long stretch of road! Anybody getting around 50mpg in extra urban? |
