Its supported on steel so should be ok...It also tested the strength of my 62 year old arms!!

I didnt realise that increasing wheel size also increases the turning circle

It's more to do with the fact that the larger diameter wheels on the Rover are also wider so increaase the track width which makes for a bigger turning circle.
The 15" wheels are 5.5J, 16" are 6J and 17" are 7J with 195/65/15, 205/55/16 and 215/45/17 tyres respectively if memory serves.

Additionally, on the 17" variant, it has a restricted movement rack to prevent the wheels fouling on full lock - this obviously increases the turning circle as well. However, the 17" wheels were only standard on the Mk2 Vitesse models (2.0 turbo, 180bhp up to 1996, 197 "200"bhp from 1996 on) although many owners retrofitted them. That said i do know of at least one 827 that had them specified on the build sheet and full leather interior as well.
