I want this to work as they look class . Would be great if shady can confirm re the curve.
Is it illegal for them to protrude at all or is it only if the protude beyond the furthest point of the bumper as viewed perpendicular to the ground?

I think you're right Owen, looking at images of sporty car exhausts on the web.

It is illegal for them to protrude past the furthest point of the bumper. In Shadey's original shots it looks like they are past the bumper, but maybe it is just the picture. Modern sporty looking exhausts don't go past this point.

I see what your you mean but it's a deception of the picture due to the angle he's taken it at. The xc bumper angles in quite a lot when view directly from the side. I also have the silver rear skid plate as shady and the top of that is a good few centimetres. And comparing where the normal exhaust finishes to the top of the bumper has to be more like 6 inches.

You can see the angle of it on this pic quite well along with the fact you can't see the exhaust from anything approaching above.

Yes mine do. If I went for an exhaust trim such was these I would be tempted to cut the the ends off to make the straight and not visable in the trims from behind.

Which legislation does this fall foul of? If this is correct, then my Spitfire is illegal and has been for 12 years or more! I'm not questioning the statement I'm just keen to know.

Right I checked with the local MOT blokes to confirm if what I read was correct. They said generally it only fails if it protrudes too far and is sharp. So this sort of tip should be OK I would think. They said it depends a bit on the tester and is geared towards protection of legs. A bit daft when you consider tow bars stick out a lot further.

Now if Shady would just resurface and confirm no modification was needed to fit these over the curved pipes, then we are in business!

I'm not a certified MOT tester (some people on here are) but as I understand it sharp edges/protrusions are only an MOT failure if they are as a result of corrosion or damage (Otherwise we would all have to remove our towbars). Not all MOT failure issues necessarily make it an offence to use the car - such as some emissions, warning lights, towbar wiring, seat adjustments etc.
