Don't you just get your car washed by the dealer when it's serviced? I mean, you have to keep windows / lights etc clean but the paint is pristine under a layer of grime. Mine is basically shrink wrapped in ****, so once a year it's like getting a new car.

There’s muck and there’s muck. When the tyres start to be braked by the ****e dried on in the wheelarches, as was the case with my pickup yesterday, it’s time to give it a rinse. I swear there were three wheelbarrow loads of ****e to carry away from where my brother had power-washed it yesterday. It must be a quarter ton lighter today.

As you imply, apart from the glass areas, washing most cars is a matter of pride and vanity rather than protecting or extending the life of the car. Bird lime excepted.

My Volvo is spotlessly clean today to go away for the weekend. That’s pride kicking in.

"but the paint is pristine under a layer of grime"

Joking aside, if there's any bird poo covered in the grime, it may be eating away at your paintwork undiscovered until its annual wash - beware!
