Just to add to the confusion I've just realised that the extended interval that Amsoil claim is with their uprated oil filter installed. Without the filter they say manufacturers recommended oil change. Diesels are only mentioned in connection with trucks.

My Amsoil experience
I changed the oil in my 163 D5 at 63000 to Amsoil 0/30 severe service oil, branded as 'series 2000'. Gave the engine a flush and let it drain for a couple of hours as I didn't believe the garage who sold the car had actually serviced it fully before sale. Judging from the sludge they hadn't.
The Amsoil took over well over five thousand miles before going black, all the other diesels I've owned have done so within a few hundred miles. I've just checked it now and you can make out the base colour over the top half of the dipstick and that is after 7.5k miles. The car also runs quieter, people who have been in it don't believe it's a diesel. From the outside it sounds like a petrol with noisy tappets. Mileage went from 51 to 53.5 from the computer, so maybe an extra 1-2 'real'. There is a lot controvesy over oil and its specs/length of life, but from my experience I'd be inclined to believe that amsoil lives upto its claims. Yes it is expensive but if you can change your own oil using something like amsoil is actually cheaper than having a main dealer do it and at least you know what the engine is running on. Will probably leave it in until somewhere around 14k, 95% of the miles I do are motorway trips at about 35 miles so no short journeys etc. before I buy the same again, with VOC discount....I have no ties to amsoil, except being a customer. A couple of side notes personally wouldn't bother with cetane booster, smells evil and didn't notice any performance increase. As for biodiesel no issues with rixs' 5% mix, think it has actually helped mileage/smoother running. Won't be going over 50% mix again, bought some B100 from a local supplier. Starting was difficult and mileage actually fell, found the 'best' mix to be around 25% with BP standard diesel making up the remainder. Car did 167.5bhp as standard, on rixs' fuel on a rolling road after a very brief (and daft imo..hindsight eh?) flirtation with a 'tuning box'. Now just need to sort the infuriating squeaky knock that has developed over the last couple of k from the offside front, which is looking like a dealer visit, unless someone knows a good indy around East Yorkshire? |

As it does about twice the Volvo 18,000 service interval and is about 1/2 the price I recon its a no brainer. |

My slant on the above is that the 7,500 miles is for the 'x' coded semi synthetics which are not shipped into the UK. Looking down the document it is saying manufactures recommendations (ie 18,000) or via oil analysis; Oil analysis is available over here for £16.50 for Amsoil customers which is cheaper than 1 litre of the Volvo Castrol oil. Mobils 0w-30 is ok; the one to steer clear of is the 0w-40 as its not a very strong oil. Amsoil is available here http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/...ngine_oil.html in the UK remember to use the VOC discount code. |

Oil analysis is avalible via Performance Oils here http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/tools.html
If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you will see it. The kit is for Robertsons Laboratories in Wales, totally independant. and of course stay on the side of caution with their recommendations. All you do is put a sample of oil in the container provided , fill up the form and post it off. The results will be sent to you in 7 days. This is the only real way of knowing what is going on; everything else everyone says , including Volvo , is purely guesswork. |

S60 D5 Mobil1?
Hi
Just bought an 02 S60 D5 SE with 56K on clock. Have heard that Kwik Fit do cheap oil changes using Mobil1 so went along to speak to a guy in KF. The Mob1 oil on ther computer is recommended upgrade oil for the car over and above a standard semi syn. It meets the required ACEA B4 stipulated in the cars hanbdbook and definately is the real deal supplied in silver 45 gal drums. The only reservation I have about going for it is that its not Mob1 Diesel. They obviously buy the standard Mob1 in bulk and use it in both petrol and diesel cars. As this oil is the non deisel Mob1 variety would it be ok for my S60 D5? Anyone with any info on this as the oil/filter changes at KF are far cheaper than anything you could do yourself using full syn. Im planning on changing the oil every 6K. Would this be ok? |
