Is this how much decent 940's are going for nowadays? Almost makes me want to sell mine.
I would say that a higher mileage one that's been looked after is way better than a low mileage one. Mine has 180000 miles on it but the owners before me have really looked after it - refurbished turbo, loads of new bits, regular services at specialists etc etc. Runs really nicely and has none of the usual B230 problems that I read so much about.

Re OAT
My garage says he checked with Volvo UK and the gaskets design was never changed for that engine and they later went over to a pink coolant themselves so they can't see how it could have affected the gaskets
I have no idea if that is correct What are your thoughts!? |

Thanks Marcus, hopefully it’s a good one, I have tried hard to find what I am looking for.
I hope your sale goes well, but it’s all a bit suspicious with the whole antifreeze thing. I have always used blue in any of my 240 and 940’s. just because that’s what has always been in there when I have first changed them. Interesting comments there from Dave, I never realised it was so important to change that regally! But probably always have, just because I like to keep things nice. Hope you come to some conclusion with that Marcus. Sounds a bit like the garage are wiggling. I am looking forward to a full service, belts etc and of corse antifreeze when I get it home. |

He's "cherry picking" facts there.
Yes Volvo have changed to the new OAT coolant for cars produced from about 2000 on, yours wasn't. Also most engines used from 2000 or thereabouts are the aluminium engines - "white blocks" not to mention in the S/V40, some are Mitsubishi engines which would almost certainly call for OAT as it was the Japanese that developed it to minimise corrosion to aluminium engines. Your engine block hasn't miraculously changed from cast iron to aluminium so is still a mixed metal engine. If the head gasket design hasn't changed then it would still potentially be susceptible to attaack from the OAT coolant and Volvo would probably only use ethylene glycol (green or blue usually) coolant. I see you're in Southampton, why not give Rudds a call (i assume they're still trading?) and ask their service department for the antifreeze recommendation on whatever year 940 you have and if they start suggesting the OAT stuff, ask them if that will cause problems with any gaskets. Another thing to bear in mind is that it may have had a head gasket replaced at some point in the past and a non-genuine Volvo gasket used. As such, a generalisation about the head gasket can't be made although if it was, arguably the gasket was designed before the advent of OAT coolant and therefore may be damaged by it. Did he actually confirm whether it was OAT or Ethylene Glycol or just side-step the question?
