i realise you're trying to be helpful, as are other on this forum, that's why many of us are on here... to pick up things and to impart things we've found out.

the thing with winter tyres is that many talk about their benefits, but few, if any, talk about the drawbacks. if you only drive on-road during the summer and you want the best performance, you have to go with summer tyres - wet or dry. ...and that's the balance in this conversation which i'm trying to add.

Have you, though, Roy - in London? Really?

I currently drive a RWD jag on summer tyres living a village in the yorkshire dales and in the last couple of years i've had to leave my car down the road for maybe 5 days, and have had precisely 1 day off work in 3 years because of snow.

If winter tyres are pretty much the same for the rest of the year and mean that my AWD XC60 will mean I don't even need to be vaguely concerned about snow, then I might fit them - but we do actually live in a pretty warm wet climate rather than the arctic hell that some (like the Daily Mail) would have you believe.

I've got the Wintrac Xtremes on my XC60 and I was gobsmacked how good they were in December in the snow and ice but I've also got to say how good they have been since in somewhat milder conditions the wear is amazing you notice a bit of 'softening up' in the 18/19 degrees we had last week but certainly nothing that makes you think "I must put my summer tyres back on quick" .I know the factory Pirellis are particularly poor-they were pretty much down to the limit at 9000mls when I put the Vreds on but I've done 7000mls on these and I've still got 6-7mm all round and unless I notice significantly worsening wear and performance I'll keep them on all year and replace with the same.

I didn't buy the XC90 to drive in London and I rarely do. I have a free public tranport card, and I mostly cycle. Haven't you looked at my photo album? I've actually cycled further than I've driven in the XC90.

I was refering to the area around Bodium. The worse the weather the more I like to go out in it.

At your suggestion I looked at you album and other than the roads being narrower than London they look like they have the same tarmac covering them - not sure where Bodium though, not somewhere that I have heard of.

I was refering to the bikes. I think you have looked at the Scottish Photos. The XC90 photos have no relevance. (Other than there was snow and blizzards.)

Bodium Castle is near Battle. 1066 country and all that. Harold, William. Arrow in the eye? Snowed a lot this winter.

The photo is in London before I set out.

That would be Bodiam Castle then (http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-bodiamcastle) explains why I couldn't find anything about Bodium.

That's odd because Bodiam Castle is in Bodiam Village. I've driven up the earth rampart flood defences at the castle. (just because I can) but It's the A21 and local lanes between there and Hastings and Rye where I've had occasion to help people a few times. You can get to the front of the queue if people think that it will clear the blockage ;-) Helps everybody.

My spelling didn't help I guess. Sorry, never was my strong point.

I took the Nokians off at the weekend there as per earlier post and still had 7mm on each tyre and covered 12K miles in them. I have noticed a big difference in the summer tyres though. Road noise is reduced and dare I say it it does feel more grippy on the way home from work at 12 degrees but less grip in the morning before the sun rises - no happy medium. I took the view though that the Nokians were so good in the winter I really did want to keep them for another one so got them off before they wore down any further.

Got me thinking though, I might try and order 1 x nokian now as sods law there will be supply issues and I drove round the whole winter thinking I've just bought 4 x tyres for winter - if I get a puncture and the tyres are like gold dust I will have a problem.....
