I'm glad this thread happened, because I love the 940, but didn't really know much about the variations. I guess the slightly newer LPT one is more the car for me. Given that Helga is not in perfect condition, it seems sensible to start off with a better starting point rather than spending loads of time and money on Helga.
go for it you wont regret it mate.

1990 740 Turbo,automatic,240K miles, gives me around 23mpg (US units),measuring the last trip to south of NM mostly highway driving.
Have to mention that the local elevation is 6350 feet above sea level,so i am sure it would do better in lower part of the state.

The 780 gives about 24-25mpg in town and about 28-29mpg on motorway.

I did an unscientific test (not like me!) ran the car till empty which, incredibly, was when I arrived home!
Put in a can of fuel - approx. 5 litres/1gallon (1gal is approx 4.5l).
Did a mixture of local roads, hilly town and fast 70+ cruising and managed almost 29 miles.
So - 29mpg approx or 5l/45kms (11l/100kms)approx.
I was pleasantly surprised as I thought I was using >12l/100kms.

I found this graph a few years ago. It's still there on the same website.

It shows that best mpg can be achieved around 50mph. I'm sure it varies a lot between cars, but it's still interesting to note (if it's true). Anyway, 50mph is just too slow for me on a dual carriageway.

Default MPG (should be Kpl when Europe get their way!!)

Unfortunately, OBV I fall into the category of "I dont give a hoot"

However, I do know that I filled up yesterday for 67.5 litres (£78.28)
having vcompleted 346 miles.

No load, in the winter, of course therefore using the auto choke.

In the summer I can get nearly 400 miles per full tank.

So I dont think this is too bad for a 940 2.3 LPT Celebration Estate.
