I thought the emails sent to the seller were extraordinary. If you don't like the price make just an offer. Because an auto 940 diesel hasn't made that price before is totally irrelevant, anyone can ask what they want for their property. The guy was talking his car up true, but what he said was basically accurate.

The auto diesels certainly don't come up for sale every month.

It's fine to discuss the value and whether it's worth it on a site like this because discussing Volvos is what this site is about.

I had to restrain myself from buying it as I love them. I'm glad to see them increase in value as they get older. They are the biggest estate Volvo have ever made. The indi who services my cars has one with over 650,000 on the clock. (on semi synthetic) At £3.5k it is still a lot of car for the money. They don't rust and as the seller said do 38 mpg. I see he has now sold it for £3k

There is a P1800 on eBay for almost £30k and it's obviously over priced and been on there a long time. But it will probably sell eventually.

I found servicing costs higher than the V70 however as they need doing every 6k whereas the V70 D5 mark 2 is every 12k and the mark 3 18k. Also an auto V70 with 320k on the clock does over 60 mpg. But the 940 is bigger than the V70. The 940 is very comfortable but the mark 2 V70 is even more so.

A good price. Amazing how the saloons remain undervalued. I reckon my 940 to be one of the best out there, yet I consider I paid over the odds for it at £1500...but what else could I have got for similar money. Value is relevant to ones expectations. Either I paid too much for an unloved version of a 20 year old Volvo, or given the condition , miles and provenance of my car, I bought what was essentially comparable to a three year old 940 for £1500. The way it has performed I believe it was worth every penny but sadly, prices may fall even further before they rally! There is a bum for every seat as a car trader friend once remarked

My observations over the years lead me to believe that they fall in value for the first 12 years stay pretty much the same for the next 8 then very slowly increase in value year on year. Lot of price variation though depending on condition. Sure yours will be on the up now.

I don't believe it went for £3k, ridiculous amount of money...

You could get a very good condition late 940 turbo and have it gassed for that kind of cash. More reliable and cheaper to run, plus better performance!

I really find that hard to believe - mine will only do 34mpg at best - sitting at 50 - 55mph for over 200 miles. And I know it's not what you drive but how you drive it..

My car has a full Volvo history and has only 44K miles. Sitting at 50-55 mph on a weekly commute to Aberdeen and back it returns 36 mpg. Sitting at 65mph going to Ayrshire, less traffic, flatter road it has returned 37 and 38 mpg respectively. These figures are brim to brim measured. Less stringent driving returns around 33mpg and two weeks ago my commute to Edinburgh which involves miles of traffic and 75-85 mph mway returned 28mpg.
