You sat on the air intake hose and pulled it partially off the manifold?

The heater pipe i replaced, was slightly kinked/squashed due to it being pressed up against the dipstick and round
to the heater control matrix thing (due to it being under the manifold, i couldn't bloody see it properly anyway),
and it was probably squashed enough to prevent the proper flow of coolant through the system, so i'm assuming
the ECU has shut the car down as it thought it was overheating due to no coolant flow!

In short, the hose was kinked, totally my fault!

Sorry for wasting all of your time and efforts!!

That won't cause the running problems you've got though.

The ECU doesn't have the facility to measure coolant flow, only thing that might possibly have happened is the coolant temperature sensor didn't get enough flow to tell the ECU the engine was hot.

However, the fact the flow can be turned off with the heater control valve blows that theory out of the water!

I suspect that if the car now runs fine, you had knocked a plug off a sensor, pulled the air intake trunking off or something similar and the mechanics report was designed to save your blushes.

Maybe that was what was wrong? It seems ok now

Not possible!

Because you can turn the flow to the heater off, having a kinked heater hose won't cause those problems with the running.

That makes me think i might have been right with my suggestion about the fuel pump fuse or that there was something else your "father in law" refitted a connector that you'd knocked out or similar. Hopefully it's all sorted now anyway!

In case you're wondering how i and countless others know about knocked connectors, inlet hoses etc - how do you think we learned about them?

Turn your heater fan to off and the dial to fully cold. This should fully close the heater valve ie shutting the hot water flowing to the heater matrix rad under the dash.

Thanks mate not sure what the none starting issue was then. I just assumed the coolant sensor detected little / no coolant or the pipe being kinked, the system perhaps thought the engine was overheating and shutting off.

Be interesting to see if i get home tonight!!
