Crikey! But in real terms not that expensive. It seems the US have a lot of love for the 850 and they still have a strong following.

A shame, whilst yes they are special they should be driven - just my view. I guess some see rare cars as serious investment pieces which is fair enough in this day and age where interest rates are on their ar$e. Who'd have thought Mk1 & Mk2 Escorts would be worth so much?

So, if a low-mileage, two-owner collector-car is worth £33K (albeit in America), where does leave the two £25K cars?

I don't think we are quite at the £20K mark yet for a "good" Gul but lets see what happens to these cars, Given one is at a Volvo dealer of very good repute, they aren't daft so must be confident of getting somewhere close to the £20K mark. Good news for us Tim if so. John

A thread that has really developed, and is an interesting read. Being a Subaru person for quite a number of years I find it surprising the prices some of them 'command'. Granted they are far more readily available compare to the T-5R or 85R. The nearest 'unicorn' would be the Impreza 22B however the prices for those are truly staggering, but have a different pedigree of cult following.
If only I had kept some of my previous cars and mothballed them, I'd have a very nice fleet of sought after cars now worth a fair few quid - hey ho!! Mini 1275GT Astra Mk1 1.6 SR Escort RS Turbo Series 1 Opel Manta GT/E Exclusive Coupe Audi Quattro wide body to name but a few |

The reason why these are so expensive is literally down to supply. It's hardly a common car to be up for sale and a quick internet search will reveal the numbers these appear for sale per year is in low single figures.
The ole "what someone will pay for it" and so on advice on pricing I always find unhelpful at best. If you take the advice of the "expert" on the previously mentioned FB page a Gul T-5r is worth no more than 7k. He has a couple actually, may be worth offering 7.5 for one as I'm sure he'll snap your arm off. The trouble with owners, and those who have admired from afar, is that they remember the good ole days when they were 10 a penny. Owners tend to keep pricing low whereas newcomers will see a couple at this price and think it's the going rate. As soon as one sells then that's the new benchmark for these cars. I've seen it many times over with other marques. Wasn't so long ago that a Saph Cossie, for instance, was 6k for a mint one. Now they've pushed the 30k barrier. Whether we think that's worth it or not is irrelevant when they are still changing hands. The Volvo is behind the curve but it's on the up because those wanting a second car look to the next best bargain after the Cossies etc have become out of reach. The increasingly favoured, previously overlooked model. |

If I was seriously in the market for one of these - on the strength of that advert - I would be on the first flight to Dundee, the overnight sleeper to Edinburgh or hitch hiking up the A1 to go and see it. £10-12000 cheaper than a potentially dodgy one near home is a lot of travelling expenses. It does look good, cared for and unmolested.
