I also use 2.4 strimmer wire. Make sure you round off the end you are poking down so it does not snag on the sides

Think yourself lucky it's the fuel side. Our plug-in has the drain hole for the charging socket in the rubber boot itself as a small rectangular cut-out. Problem is, it's not at the lowest point, so you have to either try and move the water out manually (either something dry to soak it up or move it to the hole or flick it out!) or let it dry out naturally. Not great when it's about 5cm away from the electrical sockets.

I've never understood why the drains have been so small as they are completely separate to the neck and any valve mechanism, it's just an open pipe to the back of the wheel arch, so why not make them bigger to negate vacuum issues and debris blockages?

Forgot to say as I got lost in my rant () but our fuel filler flap has a seal all the way round which makes good contact with the car body, so we never get water pooling/draining in there when closed, it's purely fuel. Image attached.

Does your flap not have a seal? If it does, might be worth checking for splits or making sure the car body is clean as dust and grime/debris could cause the seal not to make contact properly.

The plug in hybrids have a sealed filler flap and a release in the car. It takes a few seconds to unlock once pressed. Not sure why, I presume
It’s something to do with the hybrid system. My old D4 had a push to release flap and used to collect water until I tried the strimmer wire trick too.

The PHEV's fuel tanks and filler systems are sealed as they are to help prevent the fuel in the tank from going 'stale' due to the length of time a single tank of fuel can be in there before refuelling with fresh fuel.

Good point, but from my experience you'd be hard pushed to keep the tank long enough to the point it went stale even if trying your hardest, at least on the PHEV generation I have and not the newer long range variants.

I get 15-19 miles a day on pure electric (of actual use, not calculated after charge), but even then the engine is kicking in at some points and when it does you soon see it supping fuel like an alcoholic.

Chucking it in Polestar mode also helps negate this problem

Do the current PHEVs still have the button release as I know the latest non-PHEVs auto unlock when the car is unlocked, but I've not driven a current (let's say MY22 onwards) PHEV to know?

Yes they do and they still take ages to unlock after pushing the button before you can open them.

I can't remember if ours requires a single press of the button or if I have to keep my finger down for 2-3 seconds (I'm sure it's the latter). Either way I agree sk546, it seems and indeed does take ages to unlock for no apparent reason, especially as the flap doesn't pop open automatically either as you still have to press to open.

The boot release button is the same, but I can understand this one a little better as you may not want it to open immediately in case it was an accidental press (you we're aiming for the fuel flap release ) or you realise it's going to open into something and damage it.

Also, I just checked our loaner petrol S60 (21 plate, non-PHEV, non-button release) and that unlocks automatically when the car is unlocked as expected, however it does still have the full seal around the flap to stop ingress.

However as you've said, this came from a service personnel, so chances are there's no sensors in in there at all and it's just a way to appease people who don't question it. Problem there is, I'm a Control and Software Engineer by trade, so I can smell that kind of BS a mile away, plus I can't let things like this just slide, just isn't in me (unfortunately to some degree! )
Update:

Took the car in today, garage filled up, and they confirmed a fountain of petrol proceeded to put on a little show, so as least they are now convinced the problem is real. Next problem is they have absolutely no idea what it could be!

Apparently they will spend tomorrow discussing with the top Volvo technicians (I assume in Sweden), but I've got the loan car till the end of Monday anyway.

I'll keep you updated 👍🏻
