Wow Seb thats an awesome car!

Its exactly the same as the 265 my parents had. My parents took me home from the hospital in it when I was born. Its the car that made me a Volvo fan, one of my earliest memories was staring at my mum and dad from the back seat and trying to say the word Volvo..all I could manage was bobo.

The V6 engine on my dads car never ran right, apparently the one bank of cylinders was trying to fire to run backwards. Volvo took it away on a trailer whisked it away to London. It came back and a week later the problem came back. Dad sold it in about 1984. It was regularly seen in Tyseley, Birmingham and was still on the road up until 2002. We tried to track it down but failed. Dad cant remember the numberplate and we dont have any pics of the front to see if its still taxed or not. SHP ...S where are you??

Best of luck with it. I want to rub wax all over it and steam clean the engine.. I love it!

Is it wise to use a presure washer to clean my engine bay?

Hi,

Hmmm... Not necessarily as the water will penetrate lots of electrical components.. Whether you want this to happen or not.
Unless you protect electrics by insulating it and leave to dry thoroughly..
You may be better off using a good degreaser like Autoglyms engine cleaner etc...

Make sure you do NOT pressure wash you wheels as the spray can penetrate the sidewalls of tyres and leave you with tyres that deflate slowly..

My Grandad used to pressure wash my engine bay but he used to keep it clean from new - so there wasnt often the need to put excessive pressure on.

On a car where the engine bay is quite dirty, I would keep the jet fairly far away from the engine so the pressure is not as high, and try to avoid electrics.

I never knew about not pressure washing wheels Des, the only reason that I wouldnt have pressure washed my wheels is because theyre only aerosolled so the paint may chip with the pressure

You've got one hell of a car on your hands!

Very, very nice. The GLE would have been the best specification your granddad could have bought at the time - I don't think the GLT was available on the 240s until '81, I think? Anyway, metallic paint was the new flash for the 80s and with the full black leather the 265 would have been one hell of a wagon in its day. Also, as far as I'm aware the rear bootlid fog lights weren’t standard, they were a dealer / aftermarket accessory back then, which off course, is certainly nice to have!

71k miles is good going – plenty of life left in it for you to enjoy! Do you have full history with the car as well? All the better if you do. The rear arch rust is just typical, mine has gone the same way with only 56k on the clock!

A damn good valet and a little bit of nick-picking on the faults and your car will be excellent. If you can't source any alloys you should restore the current steels - you'd be surprised how nice they'll look in gleaming silver paint and polished beauty rings.

Look forward to following your progress on the wagon - it's nice to see more of these earlier generation 200s turning up in good hands.

id leave it alone to be truthfull, i said about the later v6 as it doesn't have the issue regarding cam wear and of course, has that bit more oomph
