As for your friends Capri, firstly sorry to hear of your loss and secondly, if memory serves, 1982 was the year the 2.8i Cologne replaced the 3.0 Essex V6 - the 2.8i is more desirable in general and commands a higher price.

Capris in general sell well, they were the original "Car you've always promised yourself" back in 1969 and have remained sought after ever since. The spring/summer is a good time to sell a Capri as people tend to view them as "summer cars".

Looking forward to your thread on it, will you please add a link here?
I'm trying to convince the family to keep the Capri and use it for nice days out at Hunstanton - that is what Shaun would have liked. Getting a value for it is just a fall-back position.

The Capri is a 2.8i, if I remember correctly it only has about 70,000 miles and is a substantially very nice motor car that shouldn't need too much in the way of re-commissioning. I'll certainly put some photos and words on the forum and a link here. The Capri is in Norfolk in a well appointed garage, Dan and I will probably go over for a couple of days with a Skoda full of tools some time in February or March. It will qualify as an historic vehicle on 1 April, so my aim is to get it back on the road for then; it doesn't need a Mot any more, but I'll put it through a test to make sure I have everything right.

If it was a Volvo 240 of similar age and condition it would be worth £5,000 to £6,000, but Fords of that era make about twice as much, so £10,000 seems a reasonable figure to tell the family for insurance purposes.

One owner, 64 thousand miles and it's RED*! Obviously, given the price...

Resting since 1999, Three big ones dropped on recommissioning, but couldn't spare a pony for an MOT...?

*Rotbraun, whatever

PS. I should get out more .
Now this is slightly interesting. I was looking for something else completely and stumbled upon this sale notice from Mathewson's auction last summer:

https://www.mathewsons.co.uk/auction...4-dl/?lot=6694

... it is the same motor car (SWR467R). So, it was bought at Mathewson's auction for £3,600 in July 22, the new owner then tried to hawk it on C&C at £8,950. It didn't sell there so he/she tried eBay. Bids got to £5,700 (well, maybe) but it didn't reach its reserve.

I have a feeling we may see the rotbraun 244 again

A common ploy in the used car trade, if it's not selling at a dealers, they punt it out via a "private" seller - always one to be wary of as it may be because they've discovered something that their warranty (if given) won't cover so selling privately exonerates them to a certain point.

Obviously if the engine self-destructs 3 miles down the road from the private deal it's still a refund situation but if you get past a certyain time and it all goes horribly wrong, they've got your money and you've got a dead car - nothing else.

Is it a refund situation, with a private sale ?

Thought with a private sale, it was up to the buyer to ensure the car was “of satisfactory quality’’ and “fit for purpose” before you buy it.

That's how it always used to be, the law was changed some time back to give the buyer better protection from buying a lemon. Yes, it can still be tricky to get your money back but is certainly possible.

Just tried searching for the relevant details and everything seems to be about buying from a dealer, maybe i'm sing the wrong search terms but its out there somewhere.
