When I got my keys upgraded, I handed in a pair of keys with tatty blond (fake?) leather shells. The garage asked if I wanted the new keys returned in them or a new pair of black leather shells. I opted for the latter. I didn't ask if they had blond shells, I wish I had now.

If you get the shells as well it's a seriously good deal as the shells are like £60 a pair anyway, I would've liked some stabilised wood ones myself.

Not directly related, but might be of interest.

I recently sold my 2021 XC60, the car went to a Volvo dealer upcountry to sell and I made a tidy profit (that's a first in my car purchase history!).

Dealer didn't ask about the app or anything, and I was quite horrified to review the journey the pick-up driver made, maintaining over 100mph for long stretches of the A303 and M3. Just in case there was any legal comeback from a camera etc, I kept the data and the app installed.

It's now been a couple of months, so I thought I would just open the app to see what it said, and it showed me the full up to date history of the car, including the journeys made that day. If I had wanted to, I could have driven to the street, unlocked the car, and emptied everything.

I have since updated the app and deleted the car, but I find it surprising that Volvo themselves wouldn't look to remove any existing digital connections to the car when selling to avoid any potential issues.

I had exactly the same when my XC60 went. Looked on the app for something on my new car and noticed the XC60 still there. Had a quick look thinking it may tell me it’s not available but nope, I could see the complete history of the vehicle, see who’s driveway it was on and even unlock/start it if I wanted to! Like you, I deleted the car but if I’d of gone to another brand, this would have been completely forgotten about.

Can I ask how you can see speed the car was driven on the App?

Mine shows only journey time, start and end, distance travelled. Can’t see where it’s been in between or speed driven.

Thanks

We keep our keys in a pouch inside a tin overnight. I did try taking the pouch we bought up to the car with the key in and it still unlocked though..... maybe a bit too cheap!

I don’t carry the pouch round all day - defeats the purpose of keyless entry. I also agree with the other person who says at least keeping them in a tin means they don’t lose the keys around the house!

A few weeks ago I came home in pouring rain and in the hurry to get the kids inside left the keys on the passenger seat. Wifey came home, saw the car was unlocked and locked it with her key. Interesting that it locked successfully - glad nobody came around that night.

I would also recommend cameras outside the house. We have three covering the driveway and can see everything. I catch the Amazon man leaving parcels on the doorstep and not even knocking!
Can I just ask what you expect the Police to do? The reg and vin will go on a national database in case it ever gets stopped and I assume the reg will trigger any one of the thousands of ANPR cameras up and down the country. But if the plates are changed and the car is not stopped for any other reason, just what in heavens name do you expect them to do?

The Key Tag (Sports Key) didn't work and the other two keys were a little tatty so I was searching for reasonably cheap solutions. I found that Volvo can now retrofit a complete new set of updated keys for my car, all for £120. These updated keys have additional anti-relay-theft protection, which I guess is a movement sensor? I found this on the volvocarsaccessories.co.uk site which unfortunately does not accept hot-linking to its pages. The only way to access it is via this page:
https://www.volvocars.com/uk/buy/fin...ccessory-packs and then click on the "view all accessories here" link in the first paragraph. It's a faff! Once you have opened the Accessories page, this link will take you straight to the page
https://volvocarsaccessories.co.uk/A...ccessory/22425 but be warned this link doesn't work until you have already opened the page via the other site and selected your vehicle type / Model Year.

I checked the date of manufacture of my keys by opening them up; they were made in summer 2018 so I knew I had the original keyless keys. I then asked my local dealer to retrofit this for me and I think I was their first customer to request it since it took a little while for them to find if on the system. Once the car was booked in though, it only took an hour. I had barely finished my breakfast across the road when they phoned me!

So I have no way to test whether the new keys are better protected or not. My car hasn't been stolen, so is that proof ? I do like having a working Key Tag however, and my wife likes her non-tatty regular key so it was worth the money to me. The piece of mind that my car will still be where I left it is the gravy on top.

From the volvocarsaccessories.co.uk site:
Keyless Key Package without Red key
Part Code: 31652474
This set of keys consists of two standard keys and one Key tag. The smaller Key tag allows you to lock and unlock the car without needing to have the standard key with you. The key is waterproof and is perfect for someone with an active lifestyle.
All three keys are supplied with upgraded hardware. This hardware replaces its predecessor in earlier keys and is upgraded with extra protection to secure your car. The advanced theft protection helps prevent relay attacks for improved security and so that you will feel more secure as the owner of the car.
The key case has an attractive design with chrome buttons and parts, which give the key an exclusive appearance. You can also choose to continue to use the key fob case from your previous key, as it is easy to transfer the old key fob case to the new key.
Note! Replaces the hardware in existing keys. Existing keys must therefore be returned to the dealer and exchanged.
Note! The chassis numbers refer to a change during model year 20. The break took place in week 46, 2019, and only applies to cars built before then. Car models are produced in different factories. Therefore, check the 11th position in the VIN code to see which chassis number applies for your car.
It's a bugger that you need to return the old keys to get the new set at £120! I've only got one key with mine and I was quoted more than £120 to get a single replacement. Wonder if I bought an old key tag and spare key from eBay whether they'd bother checking they were actually for the car...

The garage will know if the keys handed in are paired to the car, since they have to remove the old insecure keys prior to coding the new keys. Speak to your local dealer, they may not care since they will remove any old keys from the car pairing anyway. I'm not sure if the dealership have to return old keys to Volvo or whether they're worthless and just go to WEEE recycling. I suspect the later.

Cool

They don't NEED the old keys to remove them from the car. That capability has to be in place to delete a lost/stolen key.

Since the car can support a maximum of 4 keys, I believe they will simply erase the keys from the car and programme the new ones....the option to keep the old key shells is just in case you don't want the black leather I believe.

So....I'd try with a dud key and you should be good.....just put them all on the same keyring!

Do they supply new key blades as well or transfer the ones you have into the new cases?
Be worried if they were not destroyed if new ones are supplied.
