This may amaze you: but that isn't very surprising for Vincent parts (the Villiers is only worth a few hundred pounds). If the Comet is complete then even as a pile of parts it might well make something approaching 10 grand. In good order a Comet can make £20,000:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/285041170...Bk9SR8z5w6yYYQ

If it was a V twin then even a complete pile of parts might be 20 grand - maybe more. In really good order they make well over 50 grand:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/155258501...Bk9SR8z5w6yYYQ

Now, if you really want a 'Seriously?' how about this one at £300,000:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134154349...Bk9SR8z5w6yYYQ

... I'd say there is no realistic chance of achieving that figure and the vendor is just trying his arm... I suppose I could be wrong (but probably not).

:-)
That pile of parts that might one day resemble a Comet 500 (plus some Villiers bits) made £6,517 at auction. Not cheap!

I ended up watching all 10 of the Kawasaki S1 3 to 4 cylinder project (the episodes were numbered 1-11, but there seemed to be no #10) - between other jobs today. I enjoyed it and don't consider it time wasted at all. Millyard is a very competent chap, and quite a good presenter as well (I quite enjoyed his wife's cooking recipes).

The project didn't make any sense of course, but that wasn't the point. Get that workshop constructed so you can enjoy doing work like that Steve .

I regret to report that I was exactly right, this was obvious shill bidding by another seller and this one has also had his fingers burned. A classified ad appeared this morn at £5,995:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/195463659748

... it this wasn't so pathetic it would be amusing. It looks (to me) like genuine bidding at the auction topped out at about £3,000, but chumney thought he/she would add another £1,700 or so on with some shill bids and see if a sucker followed. Fortunately no one did and the seller looks foolish.

I find this obvious shill bidding really irritating - perhaps it is something about red motor cars?

:-(
Ah ha!

The asking price (classified ad) has suddenly dropped to £4,995 - only another 2 grand to go until it sells .

It would appear that this motor trader specialises in 'barn find' type cars, and often plays the shill bidding trick. Here is a 1972 Ford Cortina that 'sold' at auction for £6,966 recently:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1972-K-PL...p2047675.l2557

but has reappeared for sale by classified listing at a £7,995:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/195463963...sAAOSwjepjBkNG

... exactly the same pattern as the red 240.

I suppose he/she might just catch out a punter, but with winter here and a bit of inflation (and hence uncertainty) going on he/she may find it difficult to move on stock at top dollar prices (as he/she has found with the red 240).

... I'm pretty sure (from memory) that it was previously for sale with a SP of £3,500, it must have failed to find even an opening bid at that that price, and has appeared again starting at £3,300.

I still think that is too expensive for what it is, my observation is that 740s don't sell well (compared with 240s) and this one is nothing special. It is a 1987 motor car, so a few years until it qualifies as an historic vehicle and has a bit of a patchy history. The 740 had a rest for a couple of years from 2019 to 2021, and the Nov 19 MoT failure report is a bit worrying:
Repair immediately (major defects):
Nearside Front Direction indicator not working (4.4.1 (a) (ii))
Offside Front Suspension component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength (5.3.6 (a) (i))
Offside Front Suspension component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength (5.3.6 (a) (i))
Brake cable damaged (1.1.15 (a))

Repair as soon as possible (minor defects):
Registration plate lamp inoperative in the case of multiple lamps or light sources (4.7.1 (b) (i))

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
corrosion inside nsf arch . not prescribed area
osr sill corroded
Offside Front Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e))
Rear Brake pad(s) wearing thin (1.1.13 (a) (ii))
I'm not sure what the motor trader's story would be to cover that, but if I were a potential buyer (I'm not) I'd take some convincing. Maybe someone fixed all the corrosion issues, then spent thousands of ceramic coating for the paint and 'underside protection' - or perhaps someone put some filler in the rust holes and gave it a thick coat of underseal? It seems odd (to me) that someone spent so much on the motor car's appearance but didn't bother to fix the leaky footwells, sagging headlining, fuel gauge and sunroof.

To me it looks like a polished turd that is worth 2 grand. Clearly the vendor disagrees.

7/900 values are only that high for exceptional turbo and diesel's models (a less than 100k mile 760 turbo diesel just sold for 3k at auction) but the cooking motors are still common place and are slow as sin so they aren't worth that sort of money yet.

I won't even be asking that much when I come to sell my mk2 760 turbo with tan leather interior!!

That would agree with my observations of the market Luke.

I'm still struggling to understand why red 240s might command 3 times the price of all other colours Andrew
