So if i take the cap off and the hose springs back to how it should be, the cap is knackered? I'll check that at lunch time!

In very simple terms, yes - more or less. There are other possible causes but that's the most likely, check the coolant level as well though.
Last night was the coolest night we've had for a while, it could simply be Boyles Law in action but i think everyone would be suffering a flat hose if it was.

Taking the cap off does make the hose spring back (in sorts) to what it should (still slightly flat but better and slightly more rounded!)

New Header tank cap needed then?

After being sucked flat it will take a while to recover its proper shape but should get there.

Caps aren't expensive - if you want to try one first i can send you one through to prove the point.

Also this grinding nose i keep hearing. It gets much worse just as the wheels stop rolling. Its strange.

As you roll to a stop at a set of lights or something like that, it gets much louder. Could it be a pulley thats got a bearing going or something like that? Obviously when you are doing 60mph you cant hear it that much but when you are just rolling at 1-2mph it would be much more noticeable.

It almost sounds like something rubbing on something but there is nothing obvious, just strange how its suddenly much louder doing 1-2mph!

Grinding nose?

The likes of Kwik-Fit at one time did a free brake check, might be worth taking it down there to get them to have a look.

Get someone you trust to check the wheel nuts afterwards though and if the KF guy tries telling you the discs have overheated and turned blue, make sure you have a proper look when he's not around with his blue overalls that reflect on the disc!

Failing that, get your local garage to have a look when they do the dizzy cap and rotor arm.

My local does a free brake check. I do know my brakes aren't that old, maybe 18 months old, so i'm hoping they are still OK.

Should still be ok at that age unless you drive inter-galactic mileage each year but you've probably picked up a stone or something between the caliper and disc or the pad and disc.
Unless of course you have a sticking caliper in which case you may need new pads and the caliper freed off.

Well I took it out this morning and it started stuttering and stalling again

Could it be a split pipe somewhere? This is turning into a nightmare

It worked ok after it had warned up but still stalled a lot and hesitated a little pulling from 1k revs
