I phoned up my insurer yesterday about insuring an older car. I was asked if it was a Classic and I replied that I did not think so. She then stated that as it was over 20 years old, in the eyes of the insurer it was a Classic. The price quoted was very good so I will agree with her!

Had one of these in white, new in 1989, BX16V.

However these magazine guys have opinions (they tend to be the opinion formers), we have ours, and I'm inclined to agree with the view that if it's of an age, say 10yrs+, and cared for then it's a classic.

The magazines don't regard the 740 as a classic, but I certainly think my two '86s are.

Late response to an oldish thread but great pub subject.

Metal bumpers. That's my guideline.

My 1966 Amazon - classic (metal bumpers).

My 1990 460 Turbo? - old (plastic bumpers).

A 'classic' car is classic the day it is built and remains a classic throughout it's life. A car that was a non classic the day it was built, e.g. a Triumph Herald, does not become a classic as it gets older. I remember in the 1950's i had a series 2 Morris Oxford, it was an awful car when it was nearly new and can only have got worse with age, but you will still find it paraded at classic car meets as though it qualifies as a classic.
I personally don't think any model of Volvo can be termed a classic, but I still love them.
