Totally agree with Lampswinger RP. Apart from my two valve failures on the van Tyres I have also experience of the excellent service. I broke a front spring on my Merc E class. Car was recovered to MB dealer and we were taken to the van by taxi. Car fixed the next day and we went to collect it by taxi. Everything was organised by the team at RP. We were kept fully informed by the team at RP. All the costs apart from the part were reclaimed and if we wanted we could have had a hire car.
I would not dream of going abroad without RP cover worth every penny. One thing that sets Mayday apart from other breakdown of recovery firms is the double journey. If you breakdown on the way to a booked holiday with the van you will be taken to the site and if the towing vehicle cannot be repaired in time you will be collected from the site and taken home. I have no connection with Mayday, RP or CC other than being a very satisfied customer.

All,
I use Autoaid Breakdown insurance, £41 a year, covers my car, my wife's car plus the caravan for breakdowns "if the caravan is connected to the tow car by a standard 50mm ball". The policy works slightly different to the normal ie you and your wife are insured for whatever you drive and in the event of a breakdown " more than one mile from your home"!!! Then you will be towed/transported to an approved garage where you pay the bill and then claim the money back. Never used it yet in the past two years of membership but please read the reviews, they are very good, I found them on the WHICH magazine website, I also saw v.good reviews on MSE. John |

Basic Roadside Assistance from the Caravan Club's Mayday service costs £35. If you want to cover a second car that's £22 more or if you want cover in any car that's £29 more.
I have their Premium service for both our cars and the van for £119 and so far, in nine years membership have called them out four times. Once for misfuelling, once to repair a dragged cable and twice for a flat battery. Each time they've been brilliant.

As two of my Mayday call-outs were at home, how would Autoaid help then? Can you get cover at extra cost for when inside that one mile limit?

I would have to call our local caravan engineer who would always try and help in emergencies I guess. I do absolutely take the point that a caravan centric breakdown policy could well be a wise investment to cover all eventualities

I've had cover (but not had to use) with these chaps for Caravan/Car in Europe.
Very Very cost effective. http://www.vehicle-rescue.com/info/ I did many years ago use Red Pennant when I needed a new windscreen in France and my French was not cutting it. They found somewhere and booked me in.... Insurance Company were fair and refunded me on my statement + French receipt. |

If my car broke down at home I would either fix it myself or I would call my local garage and they would come and collect. Incidentally I renewed my wife's car insurance last night with Saga and they offered us free breakdown cover for 12 months (because we have both cars plus house insurance with them) but their breakdown cover only becomes active when you are more than 1/4 mile from your home. I suspect that many breakdown policies will not cover an "event" in your driveway? Cant imagine my caravan breaking down in my driveway? (a puncture is not a breakdown).

Looks like I will be covered for my UK adventures via wife's AutoAid policy which is great to know
Policy here - covers recovery of car plus caravan or small trailer (upto 3m) if properly attached to the car https://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/d...ull-Policy.pdf Just need to sort Euro cover for summer now so may do that on a single use policy this year. Thanks Elscint for posting as I had forgotten she had this

Can I jump in here, volvo assist will help with caravans or trailers towed by a vehicle covered by the policy. Punctures will be attended and your spare fitted, if the caravan is un towable it will be recovered locally to a place of safety/repairer. If you look on the volvo assist page it does quote caravan cover, and I have confirmed this with their customer service as I'm due to tow this weekend. http://www.volvocars.com/uk/sales-se...s/default.aspx
