There is no list of police items published anywhere, there is no list of the police uniform which does actually vary, there is no list of all the types of lights etc fitted to police cars anywhere so how would you know that what you have bought may be seen as impersonating a police officer?!

As I drive a Volvo - hell I'm impersonating a police officer..arrest me now.
If the police tried the old impersonation thing for having a light that's turned off they wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Hey, don't have a go at me, I don't make the laws of this land! The Road Traffic Act dictates what sort of lights a vehicle has to have in order to be legal. As far as I understand it, only the Emergency Services can use Blue Lights to be fitted to their vehicles as I believed in details that I posted in a link from the D.O.T.'s site.

It is an offence per se to impersonate a Police Officer & I say again if you have blue strobes fitted to your car, & go around flashing them for all & sundry to see, it could be percieved by the public that you are a geniune officer & that is what the law is based on.

I wasn't having a go at anyone! I'm saying the law on this is an ass.

how many cars/trucks/vans do you see EVERY single day with coloured front lights on the grills around the windscreens etc etc etc.
It's unenforceable.

When you pass your test, nowhere do you have to read up on all the vehicle regulations. Sure ignorance is not an excuse, but your never going to have a problem with a strobe light that's turned off in your car!

Like I said before why does it soley say for emergency use only? There are no standards at all for emergency vehicle lighting, they change from vehicle to vehicle from year to year.
I'm totally aware of the regulations, all I'm saying is that that can't do much about it. You can buy legally map reading lights/ or internal background lighting that are blue/green/red. If I turn on and off my interior light a few times am I going to get pulled for it?! The alarm LED on a car also strobes, not as fast but it flashes on and off all the same.
and in this case were were talking about having it fitted but never used on the public road - hence why I said how can you be imersonating a police officer with a light that's turned off

Why on earth would you want them in the first place, though?

Show or non show?

And if they're suction cup, it'll talk all of 5 seconds to remove them.

This is the crux of it.
Particularly as a number of people, particularly women have been "pulled over" by so called "police vehicles" only to find themselves being asaulted/robbed/car stolen.
Also people using such lights to get through rush hour traffic.
The real police take a pretty dim view of anyone who could be percieved as being police officers. Full Stop.

Hi all a real mix of opinions, I have removed the light from the rear window(and put it in the front window) Only kidding I have completley removed it and if I do want to put it in the car maybe at a car show or private property I can easily put it back in.

Many thanks for all your opinions, and I'am really sorry if I have caused any arguments or upset with this thread.

Many thanks

Matt.

When investigating using an American police car as was told that blue strobes were only ok if covered (it didn't matter whether they were working or not)
I would suggest either removing or covering to be safe.
