I disconnected the cables and removed the nylon block from the car to open the ball and socket. After removing the four screws and the sprung selector on the side I couldn’t open the socket.

The ball moves up and down within the socket enough to squeeze in the grease through a narrow nozzle. I injected the grease through as many points as possible and reassembled everything. I’ve had to order some silicone tubing to replace on the spring ends on the left hand mechanism but for now the only noise comes from the gearstick gaiter. I hope it works long term as it has taken me 5 hours.
Thanks for the update. I'm coming to the conclusion that there's something else in the gear linkage that moves/shifts (pun intended) that changes how the nylon ball and socket behaves.

Many of the Mondeo and Ford Galaxy forums suggest applying white grease to the gearbox end of the cables helps. They’re a bit of a pain to get to beneath the airbox so I might leave that until it warms up a bit.

I've had a new clutch, flywheel, DMF andslave cylinder in the last couple of weeks and my squeak has gone.

I think it's resistance in the gear linkage at the gearbox end that makes the nylon ball in the cabin a bit graunchy.

Just seen this...
My gear change is just floppy and is a result of the nylon ball having worn down. There's loads of white dust if you lift the gaiter up. Undoubtedly the result of heavy handed coppers thrashing through the gears over its time as a service vehicle.
Initially it really bugged me and I got a new assembly but have never got around to fitting it, so its sat in the spare wheel well for the last 6 years
Will do one day, when I manage to get the gear knob off but amazing what you get used to!
