In reality it probably is the case that the adjuster is designed so that it *doesn't* go far enough back to completely compress the spring to avoid it binding.

On the studding front, don't use lengths of more than about 10cm otherwise you won't get the box off them before the inner wing gets in the way! And if you're feeling lazy, Wickes sell packets of precut lengths...
Once compressed the springs are tight together – another pic from D5Meister's thread attached.

Thanks for the studding length tip – I've ordered some M10 studding, and was thinking that I'd have to cut it long, try them on the box, refit the box and cut the studs to length – so you've saved me half an hour probably

Thanks, my memory wasn't quite so fuzzy then! And that saved me going to check the old cover that's still in the garage awaiting a 'tip' run! :-)

Ha. Everything else has arrived, except for the bearing puller, so it's going to wait until next weekend - if the weather is OK!

The bearing/gear puller that I bought has arrived – and it's MAHOOSIVE. I thought that a commonly bought 6" puller would be too small, but I didn't know how to measure for a puller, and I found a 12" one on eBay and figured that as the diameter of the reach needed to be 24cm I figured it'd be within range. It is, and so it works

This and a pair of long-nose pliers reset the springs easily.

Looks good. Can you explain what it is you have to do with the puller and pliars exactly? I am guessing you have to pre-load a spring(s) some where and then fit it, and then release the spring(s)?

The springs are only partially set when they arrive (possibly due to shipping maybe, or that's just the way they come). So you need to compress the cover plate springs (here I'm using the bearing puller) to ease the tension on the sprung adjuster and push one of the plastic retainers anti-clockwise (here I'm using the long-nosed pliers) until the springs are on the first arrowed guide.

I'll do it again when it's actually mounted on the flywheel in-situ, as I believe that the main cover plate springs need to be compressed to allow the cover plate fixings to sit flush against the flywheel mounting before tensioning the cover fixing bolts.

And my Blue Peter 'engineered' clutch plate centering tool and flywheel locking tool. Yes, this is going to be cheap.
