My point is the balancing machine at most/all tyre centres makes no allowance for these issues so their effect is entirely arbitrary as regards balance of tyre on wheel.

As ar as I am aware, the only things that will knock a tyre/wheel out of balance would be weights falling off, or impact damage. It could also be (weakly) argued that normal wear could affect balance. But in any of the above cases, the wheel would want rebalanced, regardless of whether it were being put back on the same corner, or a different one.

Also, it's only advisable to move tyres from back to front and front to back. Never across the axle as the rubber has a rotational memory, if you do it across it messes with the tyre compound.

Agreed, I have always practiced that philosophy, even with non-directional tyres. It's actually a reason to not mourn the demise of the full size spare, unless you have room for two!

Maybe now we are verging off topic though, but perhaps a good thing in the interests of good humoured debate.

Taz & VR - both of you, play nicely.

On topic: IMHO, there is no reason to rebalance wheels when moving them around on the car, unless there is an issue with the balancing and you are getting vibrations.

I've never known a tyre monkey to know, by sight, that a wheel is unbalanced, so the excuse of "They looked like they needed it" is utter nonsense. If they have removed and refitted the tyres from the wheels, then I would be expecting to see a charge for new valves as well as the balancing, but that work wasn't requested.

OP: Is there evidence the wheels have been rebalanced, or have you merely been billed for it? (Sticky residue on the wheels, maybe marks where old weights have been removed?)

James

Good job you are NOT a customer of mine then as my dogs would have got a new "toy" to rip apart. But cheers for uploading my website link so true, helpful members of this forum can browse my site at their leisure and how I could help them with any bicycle enquiries should they have any.

So as you can see, I obviously see you as fly on the wall I'd love to swat as your contribution to this post is as useful as a septic boil on someone's backside that's about to burst! But apart from that.......lay off the funny fags

Hmm while it's wrong to carry out work that is not authorised by the owner, this tiny sum of money wouldn't bother me at all.

Coming from someone with little income here lol.

Smile its always good practice.

I would always recommend re-balancing after tyre wheel swapping it makes good sense.
however if I was slapped with a bill for a Job I hadn't requested or authorized then I simply wouldn't pay.
a lot of these places are simply out to take your eyes out lucky it wasn't your wife that took it, you would be applying for a mortgage by now
