For what it's worth, when doing a deal for the Focus replacement for my S40 at a Ford Main Dealer. They agreed prior to hand over they would do an MOT and service. MOT indicated to have been done at 32,709, when I picked it up it had 32,713 on the clock. Their invoice, which included the £150 I gave them for the RT indicated a mileage of 32,704. So to me it implies they did a road test as part of the MOT, and a road test as part of the service.

Grasshopper - thanks again. I'll shop around for clutch quotes... from reputable establishments.

Much as I hate to defend garages, it is difficult to see how they could have caused that type of damage while doing an MOT.
The symptoms do sound transmission related and they wouldn't have to touch that for an MOT. I think that the timing is just unfortunate: It sounds like your clutch bearing was about to go and it just chose that day to do it. Simple as that, really.

Sorry to hear of your clutch woes Merseyswede. Certainly sounds like thrust bearing issues to me.
Nice warm feeling DeejayP999 to see you have same car as me! have you had a new ETM yet? I have but only £200 including fitting and software upgrade!

Thanks to all who've posted replies and offered suggestions.
I have taken Ulrika to Northwest Transmissions in Bootle, Merseyside who have looked at and replaced the clutch at a cost of £372 which, compared to some quotes, is quite reasonable. Their diagnosis on entering the gearbox is the springs on the clutch plate had snapped thus causing the knocking noise on depressing the pedal. This also destabilised the plate causing it to wobble and hence the vibration. I have to say I am pleased with the work and that is why I've mentioned them in this thread. Moving on to another item that I will mention but may post separately... 1. when the car is warm there is a noise that sounds as though it is coming from the rear offside wheel and only when I am turning left. The noise sounds like a howl. I have lifted the car and tried to wobble the wheel thinking it might be a bearing but the wheel feels solid. Any ideas? 2. when the car is warm and I am accelerating and changing up gears the revs remain high when I am looking to change up. If I accelerate hard i.e. up to and beyond 3000 revs it drops down normally but if I accelerate normally (usually up to 2000 revs) they remain high and sometimes increase slightly. I have discussed this before over a year ago and someone suggested it might be linked to the clutch but as you now know I have a new clutch and the problem is still there. Any ideas? Thanks all |
