Ah of course, cost - I didn't think of that one! Everything's always about money!! In regard to noise, I'm sure if they're worn they may rattle about a bit, but then you know it's time to change them! As soon as my bike used to rattle, I'd either adjust the tensioner or put a new chain on there - nice and simple. And when running properly it didn't make a racket or anything like that. As for my brother's engine, which has some 'Duplex' chain with fancy nylon bits all over it - that's as quiet as any other engine I've heard. I just think it's a pain thats all! I suppose there's no way of getting a chain replacement...?

Must admit - was somewhat happier that my last car - Merc ML270 had a chain...... Only ever had 2 belts snap..... On my old Cortina MkV 2.0 Ghia, which I replaced at the roadside in about an hour, and then about 3 years ago on my 1999 Escort Diesel Van - On which I had to replace the whole hed with a recon unit - at MUCH greater cost - I had owned it for 6 years, and had the replacement belt under the drivers' seat on the day it snapped.... Mind you, it had been there for 18 months
Not entirely happy about my XC90 not "needing" a belt until approx 96k..... Will prob do an "interim" change myself soon, as she has just passed 60k yesterday Anyone else done one, and care to share? Mike |

Quick question really- It seems that the majority of people agree that when purchasing a used car to change the cam belt. Now, would you just change the belt, or everything- tensioner, idler the whole shebang?

Hi,
Unless you have information to the contrary that things were changed x000 miles ago, I would change the lot associated with the belt. What little it will cost to get the parts and job done, will pay off in peace of mind and the reduced likelihood of the belt going "ping". Saves the car from being an economic liability.. Des. . .

Cheers Des.
Any idea on what parts would be needed? Different part shops seem to have different lists of items! Also, how easy are the bits to change? Any specialist tools etc.? Also, without seeming like a complete idiot, is there anything else anyone would change on a purchase? Its a 440se 2.0si Auto, on a 94 L plate. Last edited by Hathwolves; Sep 25th, 2007 at 08:44. Our works LWB Hitop 3.5Tonne Vauxhell movano is 7000 miles overdue a cambelt change, despite weekly reminders that it needs doing, Boss still ignores me!
Consequently I had to tow it back to the shop today, Fault? Not Starting! I cant wait to see what it is, to me, it sounds like no compression is taking place! |
