Hi all

I had managed to free off the rear calipers but unfortunately one of the fronts would not play ball.

So last night I took the bull by the horns to remove them, fearing the worst with the 4 pipes into the calipers.

Well, the gods must have been watching and all 4 pipes came undone with no dramas whatsoeverMaybe the old girl is starting to like me, after all....

The backplates fell off, literally and the securing bolts are that rusted, there are two chances of removing them - and slim has just left town!

Still, they're not needed for MOT etc so I will live without them.

Pick up the new calipers and discs later today but still no sign of my rad hose

Tomorrow looks like bodywork day

Rad hose arrived today - finally.

It is convoluted hose with a metal spring inside to maintain its shape. Not ideal but acceptable.

Problem is it's about half a foot too long and rests on top of the chassis leg

So; back it goes to micksgarage in Dublin. I have now ordered one from Brookhouse Volvo. I'm hoping this one will fit as it is described as a genuine Volvo item.

In better news the discs, calipers and pads are on and bled.

On to some bodywork tomorrow.

cheers

After a bit of a damp start, I was able to get some of the bodywork done.

The rust on either side of the windscreen was ground down and thankfully still left solid metal.

So a coat of kurust and then base and top coat.

I also descabbed the sills and under coated them with POR 15 paint. Just the topcoat to go.......

A new NS mirror also arrived and fitted as was the under bonnet lamp and rear fog lamp switch.

A very successful day as the 320 was also finished off for MOT.

Just hope the weather forecast is wrong so I can do some more to my ovlov.

Tidying up the sills, I looked for the correct grey for them. Unable to locate that, I looked for a near colour.

The one I found was a Rover Tempest grey. Although not an exact match, it is within a couple of shades and close enough to be good enough.
It is also readily available from halfrauds.

Picture here as the paint is drying...

The rad hose from Brookhouse turned up today and at last I could start the engine. Hoorah. Yes it did need a jump and all appeared well. It started a treat and settled down to a steady tickover.

The bottom hose eventually got warm and the cab heater was lovely.

However................

I stopped it and checked the levels and then restarted it. I was greeted by the alternator warning lamp, park brake lamp, brake circuit failure lamp and bulb failure lamp all glowing at me after I had started it. To me they don't look to be at full glow, ie they are half glowing.

So what is my problem now? Is it an earth fault and if so where or has my alternator goosed itself?

Well done for finding at least a near match.... I just wacked Hammerite black on mine, lol.

If the alternator is playing up, it's more likely to be just the regulator which is held in by two screws on the back of the alt.

It is possible to remove this without removing the alt itself.

Two screws the wiggle it out.

It will have two 'brushes' , if these are unevenly worn or are down to say 1mm or less then it needs replacing.

Not majorly expensive. I got one from GSF once and it failed in no time. Leaving me on a truck to the motor electricians . The chap there fitted a German make HUCO I think one and it's been good since, probs four years back. I think Volvo ones are 30-ish quid?

Cheers Paul

I will start it up tomorrow and check the voltage output to see if it is an alternator issue.

That rings a bell. Especially the partial glow. You might want to search the forum. Someone had a speeometer instrument cluster earth fault affecting the warning lights in that sort of manner. Maybe within the last six months?

Good luck.

Hi Stephen

Put in a search and found a few threads including this one;

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...rth#post519393

A bit longer than 6mths but never the less seems to describe exactly my faults.

Looks like an alternator rebuild but will check voltage output tomorrow.

Default Someone's having a larf

Well today I started it to check the output voltage and you can guess my next sentence;

Yep - no lights on at all in the cab. I checked the output voltage and it read fine at 14.2. Even with all the lights on it read 14.1v.
So I'm going to leave alone - what ain't broke - don't fix it and see how we go.

Just a bit a touching up and cleaning to go and some new tyres and it will be MOT time
