I had the same problem whilst towing my caravan in the Alps. It locked in second and the gear indicator on the dashboard just displayed a line. On turning the engine off and back on the car drove fine but the warning remained. It did this a further 3 times whilst travelling back home. Each time was on a long gradient where the torque converter was struggling to lock up due to not hitting 55mph+. I my return journey i measured the decent of the hill that caused the initial problem and i would have been constantly climbing at altitude for approx 10 miles. Once out of the Alps it was fine and i drove 700 miles home without a problem.
When i got home i read and cleared the codes with a generic code reader which gave me a code regarding a fault on the torque converter lock up solenoid circuit. I cleared it and the orange warning triangle went and it's towed and performed perfectly ever since.
It's actually going into the dealers for a free software upgrade and health check on Friday and i was going to mention this to them.
I flushed the transmission oil approx 20k miles ago with amsoil ATF and will probably do so again before this years trip to the Alps. Although this time i will probably use either comma JWS3309 or carlube JWS3309. Although i do a lot of heavy towing throughout the year the oil still looks and smells fine but I'll do it anyway.
