Wow - thank you all for you replies.

The D5 is obviously great - but the D3 163bhp also sounds interesting.

I guess its knowing what a bargain is on paper - which i don't

Today at my local Volvo Selekt a 57 V70 D5 (P2) 28k was on the forecourt for £11995

Would this have been 'one not to miss?'

I was simply making the point that there are 2 types of 2.0 diesel engine and, in my experience, when people generically refer to any sort of D engine (i.e. 1.6D or 2.0D) they are simply clarifying that they are referring to a diesel powerplant; I didn't realise that the 2.0D monicker in Volvo parlance expressly referred to the 4-cylinder unit, apologies if I have confused anyone - hopefully any confusion was limited as I also referred to D3 & D4 when talking about the 5-cylinder units.

It's difficult to advise you on such a decision. It might be best to short list your preferred top two models. Then go out and test drive some examples. Then trawl all of the websites to try and get a feel for asking prices and also use Parkers, Autotrader or similar websites that give valuations. Then when you've researched it to death go out and see cars for sale. Thenbthe advice given above will fall into place. A car from Volvo Selekt will be towards the top of the price range and should have a full main dealer history, all recalls done and a verifiable service/repair record. These are sophisticated and complex cars so condition and maintence history are essential. Good luck.

I'm not sure if a 57 plate should be sold under the selekg banner. I thought it was limited to 5 years and under. Part of the selekt deal is the Volvo Selekt warranty and that doesn't cover cars over 5 years. I'd check with that first.

Volvo Selekt do offer cars over 5 years old but with a shorter reduced warranty. Its all explained on Volvos website. But the cars are still given the full range of pre-sale checks.

Seems pricey to me if I'm honest. That car is now 7 years old. I sold a 7 year old Octavia VRs for £2.5K (although it had done 9x the mileage)

For some perspective, I then paid £1004.99 more than you're looking at there and got a 61 plate (MY12) V70 last week. It's only the 1.6 engine but it only has 47K on the ticker and is still in warranty.

Keep shopping around, the deals are out there!

Also, AutoTrader is your friend. Use the compare function on the website or the iPad app (if you have one) - it's flippin marvellous!

For what it's worth, I own a 2010 V70 front wheel drive 3.2L 6 cylinder P3 TF-80SC engine and it's an excellent hwy vehicle but terrible for in-town driving. It's too large, and consumes an insane amount of gas in stop-and-go traffic. The mileage on the hwy is very respectible for a car of its size but it will have you going broke driving in town. Love the cargo space though! I find the transmission a bit too jumpy in low gears but not the end of the world.
