D4/d2
Hi all,
I have just bought a D4 and a D2 the D4 I just couldn't stop smiling after the test drive it is so responsive and quick. The D2 is for my son who has always liked the volvo and it was his fault I went to the Volvo dealers and took the D2 out for a test drive this then got me into the D4. We will be collecting are new cars next Friday and the smile will return. |

It's the older Peugeot engineer designed engine, manufactured in many different countries and fitted to many different cars. I assume the one fitted in the V40 is made at the manufacturing plant in Sweden, but I don't know for sure. It is a modified version, by Volvo running their own software map. Feels nicer and more powerful in the V40 than it does in other cars. e.g. Focus
I think there will be a completely new 3 or 4 cylinder engine to go with the new 40 series due within the next 4 years by which time the new XC90 will be the oldest design in the Volvo range.

I have a 2016 D4 R-Design Nav which arrived last week and now has just over 1000 miles on it. It has replaced a 2013 Audi A3 2.0TDi S-Line 150PS. They are both VERY different cars.
The Audi was akin to a hooligan. Every time I got in it, it screamed "drive me hard" - the acceleration was crazy for a diesel. The engine was very keen to rev, it stuck like glue, handled brilliantly and the ride was good (Sport suspension, not the rock hard S-Line). The nav in the Audi was good, although the voice was bloody annoying. However, the one advantage that the nav gave was 2x SD card slots in the glovebox - one for nav and one for music. 32Gb SD card full of tunes - sorted. And the nav/radio/media/phone interface is VERY well sorted out. But it always came back to "drive me hard" and it was WAY too easy to clock three figures in it. The D4 R-Design is more balanced in it's approach. The acceleration is more of a surge unless you really push, at which point it takes off. However, where it comes into it's own is in gear acceleration. There isn't a lot will keep up with it between 40 and lots. The nav in the V40 is better laid out once it's running, although the menus are more fiddly until you get the hang of it. The phone system apparently gives a better experience to the person on the other end. The small (10Gb) HDD in the V40 is frustrating to a music fan, although I have a 16Gb stick plugged in the USB as well. Oh and the seats! WAY better in the Volvo, but hey, it's a Volvo. Frustrating points: Deep boot with no variable height floor. Keys rattling on the dash. 10Gb HDD. You NEED the height adjustable passenger seat. Despite only having had the car a week, I think of the two, overall I prefer the V40. It's a more flexible drive with more controllable power. Come back to me in 6 months and see what it like then....

I use a 64 Gb Scandisk Cruzer in the USB port. It's the same size as my thumbnail and I have five thousand songs on it and it's only half full.

What version is it in? I browsed the Volvo UK web site but could only find cars with 4 cylinder engines in the V40.

These engines are the odd ones out in the Volvo line-up as they are neither the new 2litre engines nor the older 5 cylinder range. It would be interesting to know if these are sourced from Ford as were the previous 4 cylinder petrol engines. |
