I reckon this all started when I put some petrol in last week. So, I reckon it "could" be dirty fuel. So I filled it up from 1/2 full with high octane 98 fuel when I went to see Gatos and its only improved slightly. So, if it is dirty fuel, then I now have a FULL tank of the crap to get rid of. Darn it.

Meanwhile, I'm going back to basics and gonna order some spark plugs to eliminate the blooming obvious now.

gavT5, if you get to root cause, let me know... I'll do the same

Quick and easy test, have you tried unplugging the Evap solenoid top right of the radiator?

Nice free test to help at least one more thing out.

Hi Batfink, thanks for the suggestion. When you say "unplugging the Evap solenoid top right of the radiator" do you mean unplugging it and then re-plugging it immediately to reset something, or do you mean unplugging it permanently? If the latter, what will this cause and resolve please? Just want to see "cause and effect" to see what I'm to be looking for. Thanks again.

Basically, from my understanding it is a valve which allows fuel vapour from the Evap emission system to enter into the intake manifold.

If the solenoid starts to fail it can create a vacuum leak, which can, depending on the severity of the malfunction cause the ICV to be rendered useless.

Given that it is a way for air to bypass any of the intake related sensors (MAF) it can use havoc with idle and even running.

By unplugging is completely, just the connector, if it is part of the problem your car should idle better. If it isn't you'll notice no difference to what you are currently witnessing so just plug it back in.

I only mention it as it can cause some serious issues but is often over looked. By unplugging it though it will set a fault.

I guess this is also called the "Evap Valve"? If it's what I think it is re top right of the radiator as Batfink suggests, then it should be easy to replace, or clean providing it pulls off the pipes easily without breaking? Has anyone ever cleaned one out? If I pour petrol in it, will it clean it thoroughly, or is this a big "No-No"?

And, why did Volvo put a fuel evap valve on top of a hot radiator? What's the logic here?

Yes it is also known as the Evap Valve.

Part Number 9470775 or search for Pierburg 7.22517.02 (got this off an old one from my S40)

Not entire sure if they are cleanable of not.

Just checked part no 9470775 and they're full of charcoal so likely a disposable item. However, petrol cleans up anything, and when its a fuel evap valve, then it may just work lol - so I'll give it a try What can I loose! Desparate times call for desparate measures.
